Mark Romanek Finally Nabs a New Gig {Cinematical}

Dec 4th 2008 7:45PM Weird, the /film description of "Never Let Me Go" is very generic and seems to avoid any mention of a crucial plot element, which turns it into what Time called a "science fiction horror story written as high tragedy." I suppose that's intentional to avoid spoilers, so I won't mention it here -- but check out the Wikipedia entry if you want to know what the book is *really* about.

Happy Birthday Gadling! Win free premium tickets to Amsterdam on OpenSkies! {Gadling}

Oct 15th 2008 11:47PM I bought a Philips Living Color LED lamp in Amsterdam about 18 months ago, and last month the remote control went out. Philips won't sell them in the U.S., so I'd pick up a replacement remote control. I can't turn on the lamp without it!

I would also go to the gay leather bars with my boyfriend, and we would probably make out and be naughty.

And most important, I would pay a lady to have sex with me. I'm gay, so it would be an awesome story to tell my friends. I chickened out last time I was there, but this time I'd totally, TOTALLY do it with the money I'd save on airfare.

The Beginner's Guide to the 'Watchmen' Trailer {Cinematical}

Jul 18th 2008 2:49PM There's also a new Watchmen series on iTunes Music Store -- it's basically the graphic novel in semi-animated form. Chapter 1 is free (for now at least) and an easy way to "read" Watchmen if you're averse to, you know, real reading.

'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' Teaser! {Cinematical}

Jul 18th 2008 2:33PM I agree with both statements--the teaser sucks and Yates sucks. He ruined OOTP and will ruin this one. Wildly inappropriate/unimaginative director for the series.

Telekinesis puts your Mac desktop onto your iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 5th 2007 10:47PM Is this somehow different from what soonr makes possible? I've been using Soonr for a month now to access my laptop from my N95 and it's worked perfectly. Okay, almost perfectly. There's an occasional glitch, but I'm never sure if the problem is Soonr or my N95 browser (which shares Safari's DNA).
However, I think Soonr may charge $ some day--so if this is a free alternative, I'm all for it.

Carrie Underwood, Kevin Eubanks voted Sexiest Vegetarians {Slashfood}

Jul 4th 2007 2:40PM And I shouldn't have said "rabid anti-vegetarians" because that is too close to insults like "pretentious." I should have said "knee-jerk anti-vegetarians," which is just as descriptive and far more accurate, in my experience.

Carrie Underwood, Kevin Eubanks voted Sexiest Vegetarians {Slashfood}

Jul 4th 2007 2:37PM People sure overuse the word "pretentious" a lot. It has no place in an earnest conversation about ethics(not that this is the place where that conversation needs to happen, but still). One side feels they can make a positive impact on issues such as animal welfare, the environment, and the economy (I'm gonna dismiss the nutrition argument for now because that seems inherently more linked to self-interest), while the opposing side either doesn't believe that eating habits can make an impact (or should make an impact?), or simply doesn't share the same values as the vegs. Using insults like "picky" or "pretentious" is a way to avoid the real ethical discussion, by refusing to take the conversation seriously. Like calling recyclers "pretentious" instead of acknowledging legitimate reasons for recycling. Fair enough, I get it. It's why I don't get in arguments with rabid anti-vegetarians.

Now that I've sucked out the venom from nimrods Steven Andrew Miller and J, I'd like to also say that Joaquin Phoenix gets my vote, too. Rowr!

Jun 30th 2007 12:53AM I am looking forward to zooming in and out on photos and pretending I'm in a very small recreation of "Minority Report."

Jun 29th 2007 10:37AM @Grammar freak, re. whether it can be used as a wireless modem:

According to the New York Times, it cannot.
