Can you have a life and work at a startup company? {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Mar 8th 2008 8:34AM It's weird how everyone on this comment list is so gung-ho. You must all work at great places. That is good to know .
I just dont agree on the title :"Can you have a life and work at a startup company?" This implies I have total control of my job/life. I do not. You do. I give my talents and since you can honestly call on me anytime of the day, I also give my life to you, and trust you will use them wisely.
From startups to established companies, I could have gladly handed "that other guys post" to any of my prior bosses. Well, and get fired too.
Most of the companies bosses out there are:mean and condescending and have no social skills,come in early leave late ALL THE TIME while their family waits at home, They trust no one and never take a vacation because no one can micro manage like they can,they never asked anyone to work harder than they do even though they never think that they actually own the company & profits,while their underlings are just salary and can be dropped like a hat at any moment and YET, should be equally invested as them.
I have worked at many different places and I can recall one good boss that we would want to stay late for.
Unfortunately you guys are both taking it personally. He should have made his comments more general and pointed to the rest of us that unlike your people, most generally do not like their boss / environment but like their job. And you shouldn't take it that he is hating you and out to twist your words, he just doesn't understand you, And you should know most of America's bosses are not like you, and you should convince people how you can be so demanding and people still love working for you.
"How your staff can have a life and work at your startup"
thanks for all the thought provoking! I don't put myself in the shoes of people like you often enough, and think about what you go through!
p.s. my post is rambling and disjointed because i am just a bad writer.
