Some flight attendants worse than drunk passengers says survey {Gadling}
Aug 23rd 2010 11:55PM You make some pretty funny points. How about only paying cops when a crime is committed? Or paying firefighters by each fire they put out? Flight attendants have a lot of down time just like those fellow professionals, and just like them, they're suddenly awfully important when the stuff hits the fan...Since you seem to be so wonderfully well informed, go ahead and go through a minimum six weeks unpaid training, regular sleep deprivation and 16 hour workdays across several time zones so you can show 'em all how it's done.

Jul 17th 2008 1:50PM Whew! What vitriol and misinformation.
Actually the majority of airline accidents DO have survivors-Don't believe me? Check w/the NTSB! You have a better chance of winning the lottery than you do dying in a plane crash.
Also, I can safely say that all flight attendants have been passengers at some point in their lives- but the majority of passengers have never been flight attendants. Judge not unless you have walked in my Danskos.
Also, Mr. Rick macsensors, sweetie- no flight attendants, no passenger air carriers. How is your comment realistic or even relevant? Do you even know how many passenger lives have been saved by flight attendants?
Your comments just highlight your ignorance and further perpetuate the vicious cycle of passengers and flight attendants being ugly to each other. Every nasty flight attendant was created by a passenger like you, guaranteed! Why not do your part to stop the cycle and be respectful and kind? I do my part every day I'm on the plane and even if you were an unpleasant jerk I'd still be nice to you.

Jul 17th 2008 11:20AM Wakeuppeople and his ilk amaze and sadden me with such nastiness...Yes we can get other jobs-and you can walk next time you travel! Does that change anything? Just be nice! It's contagious!

Jul 17th 2008 11:07AM the "may you have a heart attack on a plane" being addressed to all those who somehow are making themselves feel better by belittling flight attendants and their jobs....you are just ripe for karmic retribution!

Jul 17th 2008 10:19AM Becky,
We've faced entire planes full of smart-mouthed students (ever seen one of those tour groups?), we don't always get weekends and holidays off (Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years at home when you're junior? Forget it!) and we certainly don't get summers off unless we have some other means of support. Oh, and add international flying to the mix-try a three hour commute by plane, then crossing six or seven time zones to Europe, getting around six hours sleep and flying back the next day- then get on yet another plane to get home (that's my upcoming London trip) Sounds great on paper though, right? I'm not trying to downplay your profession, yours is a hard job too, but unless you've been a flight attendant you have no idea how physically and mentally draining it can be.

Jul 17th 2008 10:01AM My carryon story:
During boarding on a trip that I was working, a woman who appeared to be around five months pregnant lugged her giant carryon down the aisle, plopped it in front of me and looked at me expectantly.
"Can you put this up there?"
"I'm sorry, I can't."
She gave me a look that was somehow indignant and tragic at once. "But...but...I'm PREGNANT!"
"So am I!" (I really was!)
She snapped her mouth closed and wheeled that carryon right back up front to be checked.
Moral of the story: There's many good reasons why a flight attendant will refuse to help you with your bag; few of them will be obvious.
I would also add to Heather's comment about the risk of getting injured on duty-If it's found that you injured yourself lifting a bag for a customer, it makes it even more difficult (if not impossible) to get disability coverage while you're out. No thanks!

Jul 4th 2008 9:56AM ANB:
What exactly do you think being in the service industry is about? I'm pretty sure it's not about taking verbal and at times physical abuse politely and with a smile...
Your opinion of flight attendants and their "mind-boggling selfishness" to me is mind boggling in its mean-spiritedness and bitterness. You did make it personal and I think you were missing Heather's point in your rush to bash her and everyone in her profession.
The reality is that most flight attendants are hard-working, dynamic people (who by the way, would not hesitate to try to save your life it should it become necessary) that are working under increasingly difficult and hostile conditions.
Are there some bad ones out there? Of course, just as there are bad passengers. By painting us all with the same ugly brush you are missing out.
Also, ANB, you tend to get back what you project-I would be willing to bet that the arrogance, rudeness and sense of entitlement you've experienced is coming from somewhere a bit closer to home than the flight attendants you've come across. I'm just saying...
