Student's Harvey Milk Report Censored By School {ParentDish}
May 25th 2009 10:55AM Why did the principal "censor" the report? Simple. Fear of attorneys. If the powerpoint had been presented (And just why is a sixth-grader doing powerpoint for gosh sakes?), it is a near certainty that a parent who objected to the mention of the late Mr. Milk's homosexuality would have had an attorney filing paper suing the district for exposing twelve year olds to "the gay lifestyle" in class. It is also a given that when AOL's news editors saw this, the headline would read "School Approves Gay Presentation".
The Great Coffee War of 2009: McDonald's prepares to trash Starbucks {Daily Finance}
May 6th 2009 11:04PM To quote:
"Coffee comes in five descending grades:
Coffee, Java, Joe, Jamoke and Decarbonizer."
The thought of McD's offering a "gourmet" coffee is ludicrous.
Mickey D's is a lowest common denominator vendor. The food is ok, but no one is going to confuse them with a top-line restaurant. And, honestly, the coffee I've had at Mickey D's has been weak...why I haven't bought any there in years.
Starbucks isn't my absolute favorite, but every one I've bought a coffee at has been consistently good. Oh, yeah. That has been in several states, not just several street corners.
First all female African American flight crew makes history {Gadling}
Mar 6th 2009 12:10AM Good grief! Grow up people, a few fun facts for you.
All female aircrews have been around since World War II. Operational pilots for the Red Air Force, WASPs ferrying aircraft for the USAAF.
Oh yes, the first all male flight crew was a guy named Wright, back in December of 1903.
9-Year-Old Accused of Dealing Cough Drop Drugs {ParentDish}
Dec 18th 2008 9:49PM And now to comment on the brilliance of school district/county education staff. WHAT OTC DRUG IS GOING TO HAVE A PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN'S NAME ON IT? The whole problem is not a stupid teacher. It is a stupidly drafted regulation, that leaves absolutely no wiggle room for anyone. The real problem is that regulations such as this are treating small children as if they were fully functioning adults. Of course, the schools administration has the "Zero-Tolerance" box checked off, so no thought is required on their part.
As US News goes monthly, magazines must face their fate {BloggingStocks}
Nov 6th 2008 9:13AM USN&WR has put out way too many "special" the last few years. Best Colleges, Best Hospitals, Women's Health, Retirement. At the same time, it is about the only magazine that routinely covers world news from places outside Iraq and Afghanistan. Too bad biweekly didn't get a chance to fly in print. A news summary would be a nice addition to the immediate, but limited headline news the electronic media offer.
Makeover needed: Starbucks {BloggingStocks}
Oct 23rd 2008 8:52AM Probably coming from because I come from a family of ranchers and sailors, I do like strong coffee. Starbucks and Peets (a local chain) are just fine for me. The pastries and breakfast sandwiches seem a bit expensive, but a "Venti" coffee, that's over a pint (half litre) of the brew, is still under $2.00 and lasts me all morning.
Suze Orman's got milk and other sponsorships in her pocket thanks to the financial crisis {WalletPop}
Oct 20th 2008 9:33AM Ms. Orman was recently on (you guessed it) Oprah. She now espouses having eight months of income in the bank! This is up from the six months income she previously recommended. Also, she recommends maxing out one's 401-k and putting 10% into savings. Following her immediate retirement & savings plan would require committing 20% of gross income, before taxes and medical insurance. Throw in taxes and medical insurance (assuming an employer 75% match on the medical insurance), and that's roughly 40--45% of gross income committed before housing, feeding and transporting the family.
More on Joe The Plumber, From Joe Himself {Politics Daily}
Oct 16th 2008 10:00PM Watch out, all of you folks who rated Senator Obama as "being more Presidential". The last time the US had a President who was elected on looking and sounding "Presidential", we got Warren G. Harding.
