Nov 18th 2010 12:28AM guess it's because I'm old, but the term "snood" originally meant one of those heavy large-mesh hairnets that was worm to keep all that long hair in a compact baglike mass on the back of one's neck - very popular back in the forties and fifties. The strands of the net were thick and stretchy, and it looked like fishnet stockings for the hair. As a result, I can't avoid thinking that a better term for the attractive scarf-hood combos of today should be something that is not already an actual word, and hopefully would be a better sounding one.

High-School Student Suspended for Riding a Horse to School {Pawnation OLD}
Nov 5th 2010 2:11PM My daughter attended a mennonite high school in Pennsylvania, where horses are still classified as legal transportation on public roads. At the school they had gone over this law in one of her classes, so on the next nice day, she saddled up and off she went at about 5 in the morning, taking a water bucket and some feed. In the afternoon, she rode home. The only problem was when a group of boys untied the horse and tried to lead it into one of the school buildings. At first they were annoyed with her, but she pointed out what they had been told in class and then said that a driver of a motorcycle wouldn't be blamed if the boys had taken the motorcycle and tried to get it into the building. Things calmed down and she was not punished, just asked nicely not to do it again. end story. School officials aren't the only folks who don't do things sensibly.Poor judgement is everywhere in our country, but I digress.
What Movie(s) Have You Walked Out Of? {Cinematical}
Mar 5th 2010 10:47AM I read many of the comments and it was interesting to see so many reasons given for having walked out on a movie. The one my husband and I walked out on was Chelsea Girls, back in the early sixties. A friend who was a theater manager said we should go see it because it was so bad. We were prepared, or so we thought. It was so boring. Since then, our family has made a hobby out of N-flixing titles just because they sound funny or interesting or we like the actor. As a result we have seen wonderful movies just by chance that we had never heard of before, as well as some that make us laugh hysterically, either because they are really funny, or really bad. Opinions are just that, - opinions. I can't get all worked up over a movie unless I think it is fantastic in some way. That's when I recommend it to friends. Happy cinewatching to everyone.

Feb 17th 2010 9:45AM LS - You are absolutely right. As a teacher, I have seen many children wind up happily pursuing careers that they had chosen as youths. Their parents were solidly behind them but because they were not in the public spotlight, the parents weren't accused of "robbing them of their childhood" I don't see this as a locked in situation, either. You put it so well.

Jan 1st 2010 12:24PM This is the third time I've tried to post a comment. How come all the garbage slips through and an honest comment is not accepted? Anyway, here goes the third try:
I am a fan of electronic music (chip music, 8 bit, techno, etc) as well as almost all genre of "regular" music (classical, pop, jazz, rock, country, etc). This just about the most unmusical stuff I've ever heard. If you're interested in some unusual electronic pieces, try tubing for 8 bit trip. In that one you get to see an incredible stop motion Lego animation as well, - or for techno try DJ Mangoo. In Philly look up a venue called 8static. I'm not where I can access that info, but it's where they have both open mike and imported artists like Trash 80 and Nonfinite. They have utilized game controllers (modded minus the graphics, etc) and play live. My daughter and grandson introduced me to 8static and we go to their monthly concerts whenever we can. (yes, I'm a grandma, 70 in three months and counting)

Feb 13th 2009 11:42AM Use a word as a password from an unusual foreign language with a number that is meaningful to you but not something simple to guess. (birthdays, age,your street address, etc are easy for hackers to guess) A number representing the year of your first date, your dog's age, a friend's birth year, or any number that is not a part of any written records about you or your family, are all pretty safe bets. Also, you know all those security questions which give you the option of your mother's middle name? DO choose that as a question, but DON'T use your mother's real maiden name. Pick some other name that will be easy to remember, or a word that isn't actually a name. I know, I'm paranoid, but my passwords and security question answers are more difficult for a hacker to guess than the old fairytale guy, Rumplestiltskin.
Guilty Displeasures {Slashfood}
Mar 14th 2008 4:54PM After reading a bunch of comments, it seems like many of these horror reactions to food are associated with awful childhood memories, sometimes the food was not even the direct culprit. I have the fortunate trait (or perhaps unfortunate when it comes to my weight), that nothing I've eaten so far makes me want to hurl. There are foods that I like or dislike after I've tried them, but nothing that is horrible to me. The closest I've ever come to disgust is raw clams or oysters, but at least they go down fast. On the other hand, I absolutely adore many of the things that are commonly hated by so many others. I totally love liver & onions, lima beans, beets, squash, brussels sprouts, asparagus, creamed corn, oatmeal, eggs, and scrapple. And, to top it off, my all around favorite thing to put on salads and sandwiches is mayo.
