Nextlink's Invisio Q7 finally sees FCC approval {Engadget}

Nov 1st 2007 4:17PM The bone conduction acts as a microphone. There is a fluid-filled sensitive "bubble" that sits inside your ear and picks up what your saying through the vibrations in your jawbone. I think it has to be in your ear because it's more sensitive than on the outside of your skin (guessing here). I don't think it goes really FAR into your ear canal though, more on the outside like current in-the-ear headsets, so I don't see how this will mess with your hearing too much. It doesn't create a seal that blocks out other noises from you. There is also a speaker unit sitting in your ear so you can hear the other person.

The advantage of this system is that it picks up ZERO ambient noise, so you can be in a wind tunnel or party or wherever, and the person you are talking to will ONLY hear what you are saying, even to the degree that YOU can't even hear what you're saying (of course, you probably won't be able to hear their response...).

Nov 1st 2007 3:04PM "similarly-spec'd Jawbone" ???? Umm, this uses a bone-conducting mic that utilizes a liquid-filled bubble pressing up against a bone in your ear canal, the Jawbone uses a normal microphone and a effective noise-canceling system, 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS.

On the other hand, I'm totally stoked that this thing is coming out finally, as I've waiting for more than a freakin' year now!

A Canadian In Beijing: Vegan in China, Part 1 {Gadling}

Apr 20th 2007 11:11AM Don't restaurants that serve vegetarian food have that buddhist symbol visible outside? The symbol looks like a swastika reversed or rotated (too lazy to look up exactly what it looks like, but if you see what you think might be a swastika in Beijing... it's probably the buddhist symbol). An option in restaurants where communication is difficult might be to draw the symbol and make an eating motion, hopefully getting the point accross that you're looking for buddhist-friendly (i.e. vegetarian) food. Possible down side is that I'm not sure if buddhists are vegan, so you might get some egg or sumptin'

Anyway, good luck and DEFINTELY try to go Xi'an to see the tera cotta warriors. They people are very friendly there and you can get around without knowing Chinese. I did and it was pretty simple, if an adventure at times...

1st Class Sleeper Prevents "Head-Bob" {Gadling}

Apr 20th 2007 11:06AM ... I don't know, it looks like the edge of that guy's rear is barely on the chair, meaning a very soar backside in the long run. I always found that to be the issue when sleeping on planes: you try to "slouch" as much as possible to get more horizontal, but the result is less surface area to distribute your weight over, causing sore spots on your butt.

The trick is to use those newer movable headrests to "lock-in" your head and to sleep as vertically as possible to put more weight on your legs and rear.

Apr 20th 2007 11:02AM Street food is really the best when travelling - cheap, fast, and *usually* sanitary (especially when deep fried!)

By far my favorite street food experience was in Mexico City - brother with a SHOPPING CART that was using a charcoal grill in the large section and cutting up meat in the place where the kids sit. It was like the progenitor of the taco truck - the TACO SHOPPING CART! Awesome!

The street food in China is defintely the weirdest though - scorpions and random bugs. Couldn't handle that!
