Flight Attendant Canned for Joining Celebrity Mile-High Club {Gadling}

Feb 23rd 2007 10:50PM Just for the sake of accurate reporting: The MSNBC article does NOT state that they were having unprotected sex. It just says they had sex. No reference to condoms is made at all. Besides, who would validate the accusation of unprotected sex? Did someone catch them in the act and notice, "Oh, hey! Ralph's not wearing a rubber!"

DVD Review: Repo Man Collector's Edition {Cinematical}

Feb 9th 2006 2:00PM From my perspective, no, this particular edition of "Repo Man" isn't worth laying down the bucks if you've already got the first special edition. The commentary is fun--kind of a like a Repo Man high school reunion--and if you're really familiar with the actors it's a neat way of following up on everyone. I'd say the commentary scores highest in terms of special features. The "deleted scenes" bit, in which Alex Cox watches pieces from the cutting room floor with the inventor of the neutron bomb, didn't do much for me--most of the deleted scenes were deleted for good reason, and the laugh factor (ha, ha, aging scientist comments on deleted scenes!) decreases rapidly. The Harry Dean Stanton interview, eh, it's a toss up. Harry's a fascinating guy and his Johnny Cash/Buddhist monk persona is a real hoot, and he's very quotable, especially when he gets angry with the interviewer. But if you're not a fan of Harry Dean Stanton, or aren't in to Buddhist philosophy, you probably won't dig it.

If this edition had the soundtrack, which it doesn't, I'd say Yes, Buy It! Soundtracks are so important to eighties films, I can't imagine why they didn't bother to include it. I think maybe this is the more "cerebral" Special Edition, the one for film nerds into commentary and mini-docs, but in the end it just doesn't add up to enough. But if you absolutely MUST watch Alex Cox reading a newspaper while chatting idly about trying to get Repo Man made (that's another feature I forgot to mention) then go for it.

Sundance Review: The Night Listener {Cinematical}

Jan 26th 2006 7:01PM There's a very "JT Leroy" aroma to the Night Listener. The Nov. 26th, 2001 issue of The New Yorker features an article by Tad Friend about Maupin's book:

"several writers were drawn in by the apparently fictitious story of a deeply talented, sexually abused boy who had contracted AIDS from one of his abusers. For months Armistead Maupin had been talking on the phone with Anthony Godby Johnson, the adopted son of Vicki Johnson, a social worker whom he claimed had adopted him ... Publishers at Crown books published Johnson's "A Rock and a Hard Place," Tony's memoir of his abuse and illness. The book was extraordinarily sophisticated for a fifteen-year-old to have written, and Tony was heralded as a kind of abused prodigy and inspiration for everyone. ... [It was] noticed that Vicki Johnson [the adoptive mother] and Tony had the same voice, and several of his friends had noticed incongruities in Tony's stories about himself. ... The few who had met Tony, could not be sure they boy they met was the one with whom they had spoken."

Did they clear this drama up? Do we know what's true and what's not?

Golden Globes: That awful theme song {Cinematical}

Jan 17th 2006 11:46AM Good god. That is truly awful. Perhaps the worst theme song ever? Could it be?

Weinsteins ready to cash in on HD DVD {Cinematical}

Jan 7th 2006 1:49PM Huh. That's funny. I use the word "redundant" in a comment and the comment itself somehow gets duplicated. Not intentional, I swear.

Say it Aint so, Christopher Robin {Cinematical}

Dec 9th 2005 12:29PM They want to bring a breath of fresh air to these timeless characters? Exactly what about the word "timeless" do they not understand? Isn't that supposed to, you know, signify timelessness and not needing an upgrade and other timeless stuff? This could only make sense in Disneyland, where the sky is purple and money grows not on trees, but right there in your pockets while you walk through a field of kittens and pots o' gold.

GLAAD endorses Brokeback Mountain; zero humans are surprised {Cinematical}

Dec 9th 2005 11:50AM Dear Karina, I am so offended by your obvious refusal to stop fence-sitting on this whole Big Gay Issue and take a side. Which is it gonna to be? I can't have you over for my weekly Bill O'Reilly or The L Word parties until you decide. PS: Hey, thanks for that gift certificate to Toys in Babeland for my birthday. You're a real friend.
