iPhone 4 has 802.11n, but not the "awesome" 802.11n {TUAW.com}
Jun 14th 2010 9:58PM The iPad is the only mobile device I know of that's got 2.4+5 GHz, but it's not a technical limitation any more. It's more of an issue of size, power, heat, etc. The iPad shows it's possible; the iPhone 4 focus was on thinner form factor and longer battery life.

Jun 14th 2010 9:57PM You can use the same antenna for 2.4 and 5 GHz; there are some optimizations, but that's pretty much how all the systems out there work.
802.11g is dead; chipmakers are focused on 802.11n single-stream to replace it at a better price, better use of spectrum, etc.

Jun 14th 2010 9:56PM How, pray tell, do you know that? Seriously. You mean the chip in there is 2.4/5 GHz and they enabled in software 2.4? Unlikely, given the iPad release.

Jun 14th 2010 7:54PM Really depends on the part of the country/world you live in. In the U.S., in southern Californian and the southwest (among other regions) the construction of walls blocks RF really effectively. 2.4 GHz can have trouble, too, but 802.11n base stations with two radios can push through better than the older 802.11g ones could.
In other places, in which you have wood studs and drywall in new construction, 5 GHz does quite well. We have mixed construction in my house, and I pick up 5 GHz three rooms away with a new MacBook Pro.

Jun 14th 2010 7:51PM There has never been a requirement in the IEEE 802.11n specification, nor the certified form of that spec from the Wi-Fi Alliance, that devices must support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. It's a shame the iPhone 4 doesn't, but something in cost, battery life, or component space has to be sacrificed to make something that sleek.
802.11n has a lot of optional things, and so does the Wi-Fi certification. For instance, the iPhone 4 and iPad are single-stream devices. All laptops I'm aware of and all base stations are two-stream devices. A single-stream devices can't use the spatial separation that allows multiple unique sets of data to reflect off different paths in an environment to increase throughput to as much as double a single path.

Palin photographer breached contract with sale to Newsweek {Daily Finance}
Nov 18th 2009 4:30PM There's a legion of Palin supporters who are commenting in the same barely grammatical way on every site that makes any remark about the Newsweek cover. There must be a Web site that tracks mentions of Palin, and urges those who believe she's the future of the Republican Party to go and make strange comments disparaging the authors and sites.

Sep 27th 2009 11:42PM Why would you condone theft of services? You're essentially recommending fraud.
Snow Leopard extends Wake-on-LAN feature... if your config is right {TUAW.com}

Take Control of Back to My Mac / Screen Sharing in Leopard {TUAW.com}
Jun 13th 2008 9:42AM Right. Because my spending dozens upon dozens of hours researching all the problems with how Back to My Mac works, finding solutions, providing configuration instructions, tips, etc., is just...a glorified help file.
I've been writing computer books for about 15 years, and I find there's still this notion (perhaps due to certain series of books) that a "computer book" walks through the menus of a program and describes features.
If I can help you avoid the heartbreak of NAT, the disappointment of failed connections, the dismal frustration of staring at a screen when nothing works...well, that's what my books are about!
(Anyway, you can download and read excerpts to see if it's what you need.)
