Visit the virtual Apple Store in Second Life {TUAW.com}
Feb 14th 2007 12:49PM I can't imagine a C&D is coming. Linden Labs hasn't been copying brands or building any stores in Second Life. Instead the brand owners (or their marketing teams) have taken it upon themselves to establish stores or a brand presence in Second Life. Brands already running their own brands within Second Life include Adidas, American Apparel, Scion, and Leo Burnett (an advertising company). Here's Linden Labs' own summary: http://secondlife.com/businesseducation/gettingstarted/brandmarketing.php

Wiglet: Desktop widget in Jell-o guise shakes for earthquakes {Download Squad}
Aug 13th 2006 7:23AM The widget is pretty cool, but since I live in LA-land I'm thinking a real Jell-o mold that sits on my desk would be cooler. Ideally it would sit on a battery-powered night light-type plate. That way when we have a real shake I'll have something to distract me from everyone screaming their heads off when the power goes down.

Report shows cameraphone usage on the rise {The Wireless Report}
Aug 8th 2006 5:48PM It's not just the proliferation of in-phone-cameras that's causing usage to increase.
Sending a phone-photo as email was one thing, but once it was sent it was "over". New online services that make it easier to post and share those photos on sites including MySpace play an increasing role. Take a look at the two below and think about how both the MySpace and blogging crowd might appreciate them:

Microsofts Research Grants for Search Engine {The Search Engine Marketing Weblog}
Jun 17th 2006 12:46AM Razib, I agree Microsoft needs to spend more money on search, but not on advanced researchers. The results served by Microsoft's Live search since its last revision (mid-May) are actually 90%-102% as good as Google's results. While it would be nice for MS to get to 110% of Google's relevance - I'll still avoid the MSN engine entirely because it has a bad interface (on MSN, admittedly http://www.live.com is much better) and the formatting of the returned results (on both MSN and Live.com) makes them difficult to scan as quickly as Google's. ... I think MS needs to focus on usability and to push Live.com heavily instead of their current flagship news portal at MSN.

The skinny on big fat Vista Part 4 {The Unofficial Microsoft Weblog}
Jun 17th 2006 12:01AM ... for the above post, here's the link for the WinSuperSite mention of laptop hibernate problems in the Vista 2005 CTP: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_5270_03.asp
The skinny on big fat Vista Part 4 {The Unofficial Microsoft Weblog}
Jun 16th 2006 11:55PM I was a little disappointed Vista needed that 2nd step to get drivers working. Hopefully the driver update code will get integrated into the install routine.
One question about the Hibernate routine in this version: Does it work on laptops (ie: do they wake up correctly)? I don't have enough extra laptop hardware to find out if it works any better than the Dec 2005 CTP version (discussed at bottom of WinSuperSite Review).

College Students Eat Up Online Ads {The Search Engine Marketing Weblog}
Feb 15th 2006 2:57PM Isn't it amazing how timely and clued-in these marketing studies are...?
I'm waiting for Amazon/Overstock/some major click-and-brick to sponsor a study on how much fuel is saved by shopping online instead of driving from mall-to-mall. ...then they could claim federal "fuel credits" for business as usual.
Beta 2 of Windows Defender {The Unofficial Microsoft Weblog}
Feb 15th 2006 2:48PM It's also worth mentining that since Windows Defender was a commercial product before Microsoft bought it - it's not "really" beta software. None of the crashes or conflicts that most beta software has - plus it has a real uninstaller feature that won't leave parts of the program behind.
Beta 2 of Windows Defender {The Unofficial Microsoft Weblog}
Feb 15th 2006 2:45PM Tazeeyore - It used to be "Giant AntiSpyware" and won several awards in its first year of existence. It was a pay-only program so didn't get very popular. As Windows Defender it uses a lot less CPU and still seems to scan faster than SpyBot, but it doesn't have the "Immunization" feature that blocks a lot of sites via the HOSTS file.
Windows Defender doesn't seem to update their definitions files as often as SpyBot, AdAware or some of the other companies do, but they still catch a lot of stuff (particularly if you run IE, not so great for FireFox-compatible spyware). At the office I manage we run Windows Defender as a service, so it's always running, and then run a 3rd party program like Spybot once a week to catch the last 1% of stuff.
