Is Google simply too powerful? {BloggingStocks}

Mar 31st 2007 6:49AM Google to powerful? There are a lot of comments about this at the moment as we hear daily reports about G increasing market share etc. (Must be the end of a quarter or something - talk up those figures! Sorry off-topic.)

The question should be phrased differently - too powerful in what context? G is a search engine and a very good one. But it is only a search engine (at this point - though it may evolve into something else in future. But the search industry is a rather small, niche industry valued at around $20bn by my reckoning - taking G to be 50% of total revenues. Thats about the same size as the US hardware store indusrty or forestry and logging! Search is a small, very focussed industry its not in a postion to dominate anything. G is a big fish in a small pond its unlikely to shake the big global media and advertsing companies who have much larger revenues. If anything the search engines are likely to fall to the big media giants such as Viacomm, Fox and disney who own the content. Content is where the time is spent not on serach!

Branding Countries: The Art of Tourism Advertising {Gadling}

Jan 9th 2007 2:42PM The branding of countries can only go so far though. Countries are not really like consumer products as they are far more complex and varied than say, cola or sliced bread. In countries where people are fairly well travelled and knowledgeable about other countries people are less likely to be influenced by advertising campaigns than other factors. For instance my ideas about Australia have come from friends from Aus and my sister who recently returned from there. Also the popularity of travel websites and blogs shows that many knowledgeable travellers will find out information for themselves about a country. Advertisers who try to treat countries like consumer goods run the risk of type casting the country or exposing the weakness of the country to very critical reviews. More power to the blogs and travel websites I say - forget the adverts.
