Jan 27th 2011 3:02PM Since the 'sixties, those who know about such things have been warning about the overuse of antibiotics, but no one has listened. It was the decade after the beginning of wide spread use of such drugs, and every sniffle brought about a request for an antibiotic, despite the fact that such drugs are useless against viral infections.
I am here only because a group of medical specialists recognized that I was infected with MRSA four years ago. Anyone who has been so infected can testify that it is nasty stuff, and can kill.
The thought of antibiotic resistant bugs in the food supply should terrify any thinking person. This should be taken very seriously!

Jan 27th 2011 1:31PM When I became a bum, the only luxury I held onto from my previously affluent life was my coffee. After sampling many overpriced and weak cups from the local brewers, I decided to invest in a coffee maker, and go back to my habit of a lifetime and grind the stuff at home. Peerless Coffee in Oakland had been my choice for years, because it is a local roaster, and I found a real bargain of their brand at Smart and Final in San Francisco, about $6.50 a pound. Since I am now retired, pennies count, and as long as Peerless keeps roasting it and S&F keeps selling it, I am in hog heaven!

Jan 24th 2011 11:11PM I used to have an account with First Interstate Bank before it was gobbled up by Wells Fargo. FI had a policy of forgiving checking account fees for depositors over fifty. When WF bought them, I received a letter that rescinded the policy unless I could provide information that would determine that my situation would not change. Since I would never be under fifty again, it provided the only triumph that I have ever enjoyed in victory over a bank's policies.

Jan 11th 2011 6:55PM What's so sad is that we are forcing kids to use drugs that we haven't even tested to deal with such things as "Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder," and other conditions because we think that they will demand less of our time and attention. Drug companies are selling the drugs without testing them because they are hesitant to conduct human trials on children. So while we are giving drugs to kids that we cannot even determine the effects of, we are getting hysterical lest they begin using illegal drugs. Where is the rational thought behind this idiocy?

Jan 11th 2011 6:41PM I live in California, a state in which any number of lunatic ideas appear on the ballot regularly. Since we use the "initiative and referendum" form of democracy, all one needs to do is to find a bunch of idiots or drunks to form an idea at the local bar, and if we get enough signatures to go along with it and enough equally ignorant citizens to vote for it, to our regret it becomes law.
After they "randomly" test these kids for drugs, perhaps they will impose a law requiring breast feeding. There seems to be no limit to those who want to mind the business of others!
