Giveaway: Two new Element carbon-fiber iPhone 4 cases {TUAW.com}

Jun 1st 2011 11:08PM I've been lucky and not had a drop the caused any serious damage. However fragile my i4 seems my current Bumper case has protected it from my toddler. I know I'm playing roulette here so a nice case that's not a f'ing Otterbox would be sweet.

First RS-232 to dock connector interface controls telescope {TUAW.com}

Nov 4th 2010 11:56PM This is the kind of stuff that I've been waiting to see since Apple announced back in iOS 3.0 that developers would have access to the dock connector.

Expect to see more iPhones and iPads as remotes for a ton of cool things. And probably some dumb things too.

Patent Wars, Episode V: Apple Strikes Back {TUAW.com}

Nov 1st 2010 12:15AM The thing is Apple isn't suing for the money. They don't need the cash. Their suing to protect their inventions. Apple doesn't want to settle they want to stop HTC and Motorola from making phones with multitouch tech. These suits seem to be more about the hardware than the software.

The effect that I think Apple is hoping for is that manufacturers will have to think twice about creating multi touch phones. And if they are going to use Android software then they may want to leave the multi touch out, or come up with a new way to do it that doesn't conflict with Apple's patents.

Imagine, after all is said and done, new Android phones lack multi touch because Apple won't license. They simply won't let Moto and HTC have it.

AT&T trains retail staff on non-iPhone smartphones {TUAW.com}

Oct 25th 2010 1:13PM Um actually, we did receive continual training for every update. If it impacted the customers in any way we knew about it.

I have a friend with a Sprint Samsung Momentum. Every time we take it to the store to get a simple update the staff won't help you even setup your email. Yes it's simple for us geeks but for the average user it's confusing. And the sales staff doesn't lend a hand at all. Because they are not trained to help people. They are trained to sell and get customers out the door.

AT&T trains retail staff on non-iPhone smartphones {TUAW.com}

Oct 25th 2010 1:11AM There is a difference between training a sales person how to use a smartphone and training them how to answer customers questions on said smartphone.

I've always felt that AT&T sales staff I've encountered have an elitist attitude. Sure they know how the phone works but when you ask a question like, how do I setup my email, they make you feel like you're causing them a great pain. They also are the type that will just do it for you and not actually help you learn.

That's the key difference between AT&T iPhone training and Apples. I worked at an Apple store for the 1st and 2nd gen iPhones. People who purchased iPhones from the nearby AT&T owned (not reseller) store would be sent to us if they asked any "how do I" questions. Some came to us on their own because they really wanted to learn how to do something on their iPhone. At Apple we took the time to actually teach them. Almost every employee in the store could do this task because of the excellent training we received.

I do feel for AT&T employees who have to learn every mobile OS. Including the multiple variants of Android. What a headache.

If you don't have Snow Leopard, iLife '11 is a no-no {TUAW.com}

Oct 22nd 2010 1:36AM It's kind of unfair to say once you upgrade to iLife 11 there's no going back. You can always pop in your system discs and reinstall iLife 09.

One another note, it's always funny to me that people get on Apple's back about not updating software fast enough. But when they do push out a new version they complain that it's not able to run on 5 year old Macs.

Hello! This is Apple. They do not believe that backwards compatibility should stunt a technologies growth.

If you have an old PowerMac G5 then more than likely you are using it in some professional manner. And it probably still is great at completing the task at hand. And if you are doing your task well and getting paid for it then you need to budget in a new Mac every 3 - 5 years. Apple computer have the best resale value. Sell your aging gear and new stuff and stop complaining.

Rumor: Scrolling, QuickLook and Spotlight updated for 10.7 {TUAW.com}

Oct 19th 2010 6:41PM Sounds like you could use a clean install. All of those problems sound like issues with migration and not Snow Leopard itself.

Rumor: Scrolling, QuickLook and Spotlight updated for 10.7 {TUAW.com}

Oct 19th 2010 6:37PM The new GMail app for the Mac, Sparrow uses iOS style disappearing/transparent scroll bars. Their neat but they lose one big function of a scroll bar. Placement. With an always there scroll bar you can glance and see where you are at in the page or list.

Sparrow for example, only shows the scroll bar if you hover your mouse over the right hand side of the list. Just by looking at a glance and not moving the mouse, there is no way to tell if you are at the top of that list. New messages come in and the only visual cue is the inbox unread badge.

Now imagine this in the Finder where there is no other visual indicator that you are not at the top middle or bottom of a list. Now Apple could come up with some better method that borrows from iOS but still gives you this needed visual placement cue.

Rumor: New 11.6 inch MacBook Air on tap for this fall {TUAW.com}

Sep 26th 2010 2:09AM Unless Apple wants to reposition the MacBook Air in it's line up I bet it will still be a premium priced notebook.

Thinner, lighter, more powerful. Probably come with larger SSD drives by default. Probably no more HDD option. Battery life has to be great. 10+ hours.

Rumor: New 11.6 inch MacBook Air on tap for this fall {TUAW.com}

Sep 26th 2010 1:55AM I don't think the Air will be replacing the White MacBook. The MacBook is a heavy seller in the education market.
