Who's Black Now? Significance of One Drop {Blackvoices Main}
Nov 12th 2008 11:13AM I have two questions -
If Dr. King wanted us to be a race-neutral society, why is it still so important what race ANYONE is?
If race is still important, then why does the President-Elect deny his Caucasian half? He doesn't call himself Afro-Caucasian-American. At least Tiger Woods embraces all of his ethnicities.
Things NOT to do at Mardi Gras in New Orleans (unless you want to go to jail) {Gadling}
Feb 1st 2008 2:47PM I agree with Mary. I'm also a native, and I see much more misbehavior from out of towners than from locals. Come on down, have fun but please leave any type of attitude, other than having a great laid-back time, at home! I also agree that most folks outside of the city are unaware there are two Mardi Gras's. If you're in the Quarter, it's R rated and pretty rowdy. But if you spend any time outside of the Quarter and in the residential areas along the parade routes, it's very G rated and family-oriented. It's basically a big neighborhood picnic or block party for the most part. I only bring visitors to the Quarter if they specifically ask me, and even then I try to talk them out of it. There is so much more to Mardi Gras than what you see in the mass media or on certain video productions offered on late-night TV.
How to dress for Mardi Gras in New Orleans {Gadling}
Jan 31st 2008 3:15PM As a native New Orleanian and veteran of many carnivals, I always recommend to visitors to bring and wear hiking boots. Mardi Gras involves a LOT of walking and the more support and protection for your feet, the better. I concur on the idea of a light, lined parka - something to keep you dry and warm if the weather changes (which it always does). Add sunblock to the list, too. If you go into the Quarter, bring only your driver's license, a credit card, your hotel room key, and cash, put them in your front pockets, and, ladies, leave the purses behind. Sadly, pickpockets come to carnival also.
By the way, a lot of the "dirty" in New Orleans is created by visitors, not by locals. Yea, life is a little looser in the Big Easy, but jeez, some manners are in order, k? The Quarter has never been cleaner than in the last two years since the SDT company took over. Local heroes, they are. So come on down, pass a good time, treat the city as if it were your own home, and it'll love you right back!
Limbaugh: Classless Players Look Like Bloods and Crips {Fanhouse NFL Blog}
Jan 21st 2007 10:00PM The one aspect of the remarks which warrant consideration is that the NFL has simply gone too far in allowing criminals to play professional football. While there are many, many classy and law-abiding players, the fact is that there are too many felons, accuseds, users and other miscreants taking home sizeable paychecks and setting horrible examples. The bar needs to be set higher.
Week 12 NFL Power Rankings: The Mike Tysons, 1-8 {Fanhouse NFL Blog}
Dec 1st 2006 8:55AM Now, if you put these four AFC teams and four NFC teams in an eight team playoff bracket, AFC v NFC, what would the outcome be? Even though I'm an NFC fan, I have to admit that three of the four NFC teams probably wouldn't be around after week one. I'm guessing the Super Bowl will be decided this year in the AFC championship game.
