Through the Gadling Lens: apertures and shutters and ISOs, oh my! {Gadling}

Nov 11th 2008 5:43PM Wow, that was a really brilliant, uncomplicated way of describing those functions! Very simple but accurate. Actually, my 12 year old is starting to show some interest in photography, and I'm definitely going to show this to him. My explanations have been a bit too vague for him. Never thought of drawing pictures! Not to imply that your description is child-like, of course - but that it's short and to the point enough that it will describe the functions w/o having to read a book about it! Thanks - and enjoy the UK!

Through the Gadling Lens: What kind of camera should I buy? {Gadling}

Oct 29th 2008 2:24PM Looking forward to the new column, Karen! I'm a film DSLR girl, with a point and shoot who is still saving her pennies for my digital SLR. I'd love to hear in a future article, some of what went into your consideration when buying your digital SLR (besides comfort in the hand, of course!).

Girls with guitars a growing trend {ParentDish}

Mar 18th 2007 6:09PM 6 is not necessarily too young for guitar. My 6 y.o. has been playing violin for the last 5 months, and doing quite well. The trick is to find a teacher who is willing to do some adaptations. For instance, she is just starting to read a few notes - until now, her teacher has been annotating her music (A0, A1, A2 - which means A string 0 fingers, 1 finger, 2 fingers, etc.) - it's a great confidence booster as well. And yes, my daughter wants to play guitar too, but I figured one stringed instrument at a time!

Jimmy Carter now great-grandpa {ParentDish}

Sep 5th 2006 11:21AM I didn't think much of him as President, but I think he is the best ex-President we've ever had. Congratulations to his whole family!

Heidi Klum won't have a waterbirth {ParentDish}

Jul 21st 2006 9:27AM Let's forget all that - she's having 3 kids in 3 years! She'll be an expert in whatever way she wants to give birth if she keeps up this pace!!

Caught in the middle {ParentDish}

Apr 30th 2006 8:24PM You may be able to be included in her restraining order - esp. if it covers her son as well. If he's not allowed to be within XX ft. of his son, that would at least keep him from threatening you at your home when his son is there. Worth mentioning to your friend and/or her lawyer.

Good luck to you and your friend - divorce is difficult enough w/o this type of behavior.

Men fail to follow up after vasectomy, study suggests {ParentDish}

Apr 9th 2006 9:00AM I know several people who have had them, with no side ill effects. I also know people who have had them successfully reversed - he divorced, remarried, and they wanted more children. He said the reversal was slighly more uncomfortable than the original procedure, but he figured, compared to what his wife was going to go through (9 months of pregnancy and then labor, ending with squeezing an 8 lb. watermelon out through her hoo-ha) it was minor.

However, I do know one person who had it, never had it checked, and now has a fourth, unplanned (but of course, still loved and beautiful) child - so yes, it does happen. Men - get those swimmers checked!

And this, just like every other discussion of reproductive rights, is personal - it is between you and your partner, and may only be right for your family, not mine or my neighbors. However, isn't it wonderful to at least have the choice??

Emotional Armor: Empowering t-shirts for women and girls {ParentDish}

Apr 8th 2006 12:08PM This is a pet peeve of mine, esp. when it comes to young girls (not babies, not teens) t-shirts. So much of the stuff that's out there is crass, rude, or inappropriate ... and it's not that I'm a prude. I just don't need my 6 year old to look like trash. Good for her! Can't wait until she has her site up - thanks Karen!

How do you make your Easter Eggs? {ParentDish}

Apr 8th 2006 10:12AM At Alex's age, I say hard boiled - and no more than you're willing to eat in the next week!

When my kids were young, we did some dying, but for impatient toddlers, sometimes the wait was too much. Usually we used kid-safe markers, stickers, and watercolor paints with q-tips as brushes. Also, we started a tradition of each year, each child got to paint one wooden egg (found at any craft store). When they were young, I primed them white first, then let them have at it. I always make sure to write the year on the egg. We keep them from year to year, and now that my kids are 5 and 10, we're getting a lovely collection that occupies a basket in the center of our table - and makes for nice recollections.

Enjoy!

Is it "tacky" to take your kids into a liquor store? {ParentDish}

Mar 30th 2006 12:05PM I think it was Melissa Summers who had a picture of her son pushing the little kids cart through the store with the 6 pack of beer in it - absolutely loved that pic! Hey, my father had my brother and I trained so that when he clapped his hands, the two of us would race off to get him a beer!

Seriously, I think if you're feeling guilty about it, then maybe there are other things going on. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you're not there daily, as long as you're not breaking open the bottle as soon as you get in the car, as long as you are showing your kids how to be responsible, then I don't see the problem in bringing them in. It might even be good - help to open a dialogue with them about the need to be responsible when drinking, etc.

Cheers!
