Visiting The Christian Community In Iraq {Gadling}

Dec 5th 2012 1:03AM The inscriptions are not Mongolian, they are in Aramaic (aka Syriac or Assyrian), the language of Jesus Christ and the lingua franca of the region before the Arab Conquest, due to the Assyrian empire's influence. Christians in Iraq, who are descendants of the Assyrians, still speak this language and it's written form is taught not only in our Churches but also in K-12 schools. An Assyrian school just recently opened in Baghdad, and dozens of similar schools are in operation in the area around Mosul called the Nineveh Plains as well as in Assyrian communities in northern Iraq.
