Win a Square Trade accident-coverage iPhone warranty from TUAW {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 23rd 2009 8:46PM I once ran over an old cell phone with a 20 ton fire truck after it fell off my belt. Needless to say it wasn't pretty. The ironic thing is that LCD screen brick cost about the same to replace as the 'new' cost of an iPhone.

To AppleCare or not to AppleCare -- that is the question {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 21st 2009 9:45PM Another possibility/option to add into the mix when making the cost/benefit analysis is the warranty extension extension offered by using many premium credit cards. I always use my American Express to make large purchases for this reason. It automatically doubles the manufactures warranty up to a maximum of three years as long as the entire purchase is charged to the card. In the case of most Apple products this gives you two years of coverage (vs. three with AppleCare. albeit at $0) It also provides comprehensive 90 day accidental damage/theft/loss coverage which covers almost anything short of war, even if your fault, something Applecare doesn't. Basically you take your product in for repair as out of warranty and if it was something that would have been covered under the original warranty they foot the bill. While I've never had to use it (luckily) for a laptop I have used the service for several large electronics purchases and the customer service/experience was quite good - very straightforward and quick. So this makes AppleCare a much less attractive option to me since I'm only getting one extra year for the money. Just something to think about.
