Bloomberg: vPhone coming in January {TUAW.com}

Jul 1st 2010 7:23PM I get tired of hearing this framed as "ending carrier exclusivity" like it's simply a matter of the agreements and the like. The correct statement would be more like "creates an entire new iPhone especially for Verizion" In the fast majority of countries where the iPhone was launched with initial exclusivity that has ended and it is being sold through multiple carriers (France, UK, Germany, etc). That is because there is a world wide STANDARD for mobile telephony that the iPhone is built for, GSM. The vast majority of the developed world with the exception of the US and Canada (and Japan for very different reasons) adhere to this standard and it really is just a contractual/business decision to sell it through multiple carriers. Most of these markets are much more competitive for the simple reason that it's an apples to apples thing vs a hodgepodge of proprietary networks, not to mention a much more pro-competition, free market regulatory environment. AT&T has a monopoly on (albeit crappy) GSM service in this country and all but runs the FCC which they use to entrench their position. It's interesting to note not only how much more competitive many of these other markets are in terms of pricing and the like but in technical standards/service reliability because they must live up to the other providers. AT&T's joke of a network would never fly in Europe, people would just use a network that worked. What are you going to do here, though? It's take it or leave it. Verizion, Sprint, etc will never be direct competitors to AT&T in the same way O2, T-Mobile, Vodaphone, E-Plus and literally hundreds of MVO's compete in Germany, for example. The real issue is the f*%#ed up US mobile telephony market. It's akin to having to buy TV that only works on their service from your satellite, cable or over the air provider and being limited to a crappy selection that differs from provider to provider, at whatever price they set. If you want a Bravia you have to buy it from DirectTV and if you want a Samsung it has to come from Comcast and only works there. The mobile marketplace in much of the rest of the world is more sane with the two transactions more separate, the same way we might pick a TV then comparison shop for the best price online, at Best Buy, Costco, etc, buy it and then and only then pick out your service provider. That's because they all adhere to the standard, the same way as all TV's accept a HDMI/composite/coax signal or the like. I'm not exactly trying to defend Apple here, they do plenty worthy of critiscm. Just remember we are talking about making an entirely new, proprietary phone just for one carrier in a small subgroup of their total market with all the technical, manufacturing, inventory, retail and other hassle that involves. It will never be worth it and runs counter to all of Apple's market strategy to this point. Verizion will get the iPhone when they finally have a network that meets the world standard, not their own made-up one.

Dec 25th 2009 10:55PM OmniFocus, though I think it's just too much! I've been looking at Things for a while, but already having paid for the OmniFocus bundle (before Things had sync) it's been hard to justify.

Win a Square Trade accident-coverage iPhone warranty from TUAW {TUAW.com}

Oct 23rd 2009 8:46PM I once ran over an old cell phone with a 20 ton fire truck after it fell off my belt. Needless to say it wasn't pretty. The ironic thing is that LCD screen brick cost about the same to replace as the 'new' cost of an iPhone.
