Big in Japan: Hello Kitty and the Culture of Cute {Gadling}

Sep 8th 2007 12:57AM I once saw what can only be described as a "hello kitty" love machine-- a black SUV decorated with all HK stuff in Osaka.

No cheese during kids' tv? {Slashfood}

Feb 12th 2007 12:26AM Does anyone else remember the ABC PSA-- not quite part of Schoolhouse Rock, but along those lines-- where the song was "I Hanker for a Hunk of Cheese"? Lo, how the mighty hath fallen. Cheese rules, and I think the physicians could maybe more usefully direct their complaints elsewhere.

High-end restaurants have some low-end secrets {Slashfood}

Dec 5th 2006 8:16PM It's actually kind of a relief, I think, to know that chefs are using common ingredients that you could have at home. Although I would certainly *not* want to pay top dollar for a mac & cheese dish that contained Kraft singles... I think the price of the dish would make a difference to my caring about what was in it.

I do remember reading somewhere that most pastry chefs used canned pumpkin because doing it yourself is a PITA, and canned pumpkin is more homogenous and reliable. Made me feel better about my Libby's.

Cooking Cute: a bento site {Slashfood}

Jul 29th 2006 9:57PM OMG! Lunch porn!

Slashfood Ate (8): Favorite Food Smells {Slashfood}

Jul 20th 2006 12:55AM Warzy-- doesn't sound super weird to me, because canned soup smells like rotten meat to me. And even if it's vegetable. Go figure. As far as heavenly smells, grilled meat, and roasting chickens. Can't beat that Roli Roti truck.

How to make really great iced tea {Slashfood}

Jul 8th 2006 7:29PM Thank you, Rainey, for pointing out that not all iced tea needs to be sweetened. However, I have to say that there's no waste involved in drinking good tea, hot or cold, by the cup or the quart. I *love* iced earl grey, and in fact Twinings even provides a recipe. I adapted it to Safeway's EG and it's yummy. Unsweetened.

Food Movies We Love: Tampopo {Slashfood}

Jul 8th 2006 7:24PM This movie really is one of the best food movies ever, whether you like Japanese culture or not. It shows the love of food in so many dimensions.

Summer Sake {Slashfood}

Jul 3rd 2006 1:19PM I really enjoy sake. It is very light and cool. Hot sake from a cheesy Japanese restaurant is to be avoided: you inhale alcohol and then you can't taste anything. I personally enjoy "nigori" sake, which is cloudy and has a little sediment in the bottle. It's very good chilled. I think it would make a great base for cocktails. It's also what I call a "stand up" drink, meaning you don't know how much you've drunk until you try to stand up. So enjoy it!

I have not eaten a steak since 1992 {Slashfood}

May 30th 2006 11:45PM Just take it slowly. Seriously, I've heard from many former vegetarians, as well as those forced by finances to live on Ramen, that red meat in large quantities becomes harder to eat-- digestive comfort-wise-- when you've been away for awhile. And you wouldn't want to ruin it for yourself! Has anyone else heard this or had this experience?

Slashfood Ate (8): Best steakhouse sides {Slashfood}

May 30th 2006 11:42PM Creamed Spinach ?!?!!? Blecch. What did the poor, victimized spinach ever do to you, that you should wish this fate worse than, worse than, well I don't know, but Creaming? Never! Can't abide the stuff. And don't get me started on creamed corn.
