That may be true in the UK, US, and similar countries, but is not necessarily true in areas where sanitation facilities are poor or absent. Years ago, Dr. Herbert Dupont showed that U.S. students who attended a university in Mexico had a higher risk of travellers' diarrhea if they ate out as compared to those who prepared food in their own rooms. This occurred because many eateries favored by students at that time and place left food open where it was contaminated by flies.
