Should Al Gore's movie be banned from public schools? {ParentDish}
Jan 30th 2007 5:14PM See this article. The Bush administration pressured scientists to debunk global warming. Looks like Chris is right!

Best Parisian Baguettes {Gadling}
Nov 21st 2006 2:59PM It's actually not hard at all to find the best bakeries in Paris. I lived there for 8 years and will share a secret. In the morning hours, simply walk a few blocks in any direction and you'll see that one bakery in every neighborhood always has a loooooooong line (often wrapping around corners and down stairways on a Sunday morning), while the mediocre bakeries have far shorter lines. Another trick: Study the bottom of the baguette--where the loaf would touch the pan. If you see small imprinted dots or a tiny gridlike pattern, go somewhere else. That pattern means that the loaf was brought into the shop frozen and only baked on-site (quelle horreur!!), instead of being prepared from scratch inhouse. My Parisian friends taught me that!

Who said parents have to be lame? {ParentDish}
Nov 17th 2006 10:43AM There isn't a parent out there who doesn't know that feeling. But I'm a big believer that you shouldn't subjogate your own dreams completely for your children. It's good for kids to see their parents having lots of interests and passions. What you do for a living isn't who you are. We Americans define ourselves by our careers more than any other nationality, which isn't good. It teaches kids that grades/school/work/money/stuff is more important than what you think and how you feel. We have this stigma that if you can't earn money doing it, then it must be unimportant. "A hobby." I would imagine that there are plenty of theatrical/writing/creative opportunities in Austin, the hip town that it is. Even if you can't make a living doing it, or at least at the beginning, you can do something else to bring home the bacon and do what you're passionate about on the side. Let your daughter see that you're more than your job, and how you make time for those other interests because they're important to you. Hopefully, she'll grow up not feeling the need to define herself by narrow criteria, too.
New Hampshire school bans electronic games due to students not exercising during recess {ParentDish}
Nov 16th 2006 7:15PM Uh, sorry but...Is this really news? This is pretty much commonplace in every school I've ever heard about, for the reasons outlined above. This is the established policy in my own kids' school, my sister's kids' school (in another state), all my friends' schools across the country... Yup, pretty much the done thing everywhere. Occasionally my kids can bring electronic games on field trips where there will be an extremely long bus ride. But otherwise, nope.
"Happy Hour Play Dates" in the New York Times: is drinking around your kids a sign of problems? {ParentDish}
Nov 10th 2006 9:22AM JD, I guess I don't understand what annoys you about this article. To me, it seems like a balanced story on what is clearly a growing trend. Sure, most of these moms are simply kicking back with a glass of wine or two in moderation, but there are clearly others getting completely boozed up. What's wrong with the Times pointing this out? That's Journalism 101. As to the mom who passed out and couldn't answer the door to let her 7-year-old into the house, your reaction is rather churlish. Maybe it's not a criminal offense (in NJ or anywhere else), but it is certainly pathetic to be so inebriated that you can't take care of your child. The article illustrates the difference between happy socializing and dangerous escapism. That's what good reporting is. Reread the article.
Tips for traveling with kids {ParentDish}
Nov 5th 2006 8:14AM The best site I've seen for advice on traveling with kids is WeJustGotBack.com (www.wejustgotback.com). Excellent hotel reviews and smart travel tips from readers (flying with kids, saving money, car trips, museum-going, and so on). On the home page right now, there are articles on how to find a kid-friendly golf resort and cool, active tours of Maui with teens.
