Acupuncture and Pregnancy? {ParentDish}

Dec 27th 2008 11:30AM I used accupuncture at the end of my third pregancy to help battle painful carpal tunnel syndrome, which I'd also experienced in the last few weeks of my other pregnancies. It definitely worked, but only temporarily. Still, relief for a few days was better than no relief at all. Luckily the symptoms went away for good each time the baby was born.

Do clumsy kids make obese adults? {ParentDish}

Aug 15th 2008 7:47PM Having poor cognitive skills doesn't mean being clumsy. It means being a slow learner. The study seems to be linking a low intelligence with a propensity for becoming obese.

Are Americans turning their kids into wimps? {ParentDish}

Jun 26th 2008 6:16AM I don't think she was talking so much about physical overprotection as emotional and social overprotection. Today parents tend to engineer their kids' lives so that they never experience anything but success. Kids can't learn coping skills and resilience unless they have to face an occasional disappointment and failure. For example, parents pressure pricincipals to put their kids in certain classes with teachers that are "a good fit." That's code for "I'm afraid my kid can't handle a strict teacher." Yet what happens when, later in life, they have a bossy coach, an aggressive colleague, or a tough boss? Kids need to deal with what life throws at them, and they need to learn how to deal with different kinds of personalities, but overprotective parents deprive them of learning how to deal with "real life." And they have to learn that no, they're not great at EVERYTHING. It's actually very useful to know what you're not good at.

Whose hair is it, anyway? {ParentDish}

Apr 6th 2008 8:43PM People, PEOPLE! It's not about the HAIR! It's about someone thinking she has the right to make that kind of decision about someone else's kid! Grandma or not, it was not her call. I would have been furious.

JLo's $6 million twins {ParentDish}

Feb 20th 2008 2:00PM The difference between J Lo and the Jolie-Pitts is that Angelina and Brad gave their "fee" to charity. I don't believe other celebrities have done that.

Have baby, will travel--planning our first real vacation as a family! {ParentDish}

Jan 9th 2008 7:16AM I just got back from a family vaca in NOLA and it was a great time! Check out this article, called "25 Reasons to Bring the Kids to New Orleans," on WeJustGotBack.com:

What would you do if your child proved to be a gifted athlete at a young age? {ParentDish}

Jan 6th 2008 11:22AM So often, it's not the kid's dream to become a top athlete--it's the parent's dream. I can't believe how many parents I've met, whom I thought were cool and balanced and great, and then--pow! You watch a soccer or baseball game and their kid is playing and these folks (both moms and dads, btw) turn into raving lunatics, screaming at their kids and being SO competitive. I always feel sorry for their kids. They take the fun out of sports and pour the pressure on way to early.

Nicole Kidman pregnant? {ParentDish}

Jan 2nd 2008 3:12PM Your source (which looks like a tabloid rag, by the way) quotes "a pal," with no name given. Maybe not such a reputable place to draw tidbits for blogging.

Things we do for our kids {ParentDish}

Dec 26th 2007 6:26PM Wow. I found this post to be very cranky.

Of course Alvin isn't going to spark a frenzy among Oscar nominators, but that's not why we go, now is it? Funnily enough, I brought my kids to see Alvin while my husband saw I Am Legend. Guess what? My kids LOVED Alvin. My husband said I Am Legend stunk. So dollar for dollar, we got more value from the chipmunks.

Airplane tactics for toddlers {ParentDish}

Dec 18th 2007 5:59AM My favorite resource for tips on traveling with kids is WeJustGotBack.com:

http://www.wejustgotback.com

Look for the words "tip sheets" on the horizontal yellow bar--they are pages full of reader-generated advice. One is about flying with kids.
