Which country loves to work? See who doesn't take vacation time {Gadling}

Aug 8th 2010 8:30PM Interesting you wrote about this. I just posted an article on my blog yesterday about some of the cultural shifts taking place in the US that are resulting in most Americans taking less and less vacation time.

Think about it. When I was a kid (okay - knock off the "old" jokes) it wasn't unusual for a family to take a two week vacation. Btw, that's far, far less than the "holidays" that Europeans take of 4-6 weeks. Then we scaled back to long weekends. More recently it's the stay-cation. Oh, and don't forget to bring your laptop and cell phone while you "relax."

The sea change taking place is that more people are adapting travel as a lifestyle rather than an infrequent break from their lifestyle. Less focus will be on homes, cars and suburbs and more on creativity and innovation. Imagine that.

New and improved Amazon Kindle - new price, new colors, new features {Gadling}

Jul 29th 2010 2:41AM It's amazing how the prices on technology go down after a little while. Can't fathom why some people have to be the first on the block to have the latest new gadget. I'll get a Kindle when it goes below $99. You just KNOW it will.

Five local customs we just can't follow {Gadling}

Jul 26th 2010 3:06PM I went on a cruise in the Caribbean several years ago. On one of the islands decided to take a tour around in a van with a dozen other people. I think it was Barbados. One man from the boat said, "Damn, this sure doesn't look like Texas. All they have are beaches and banana trees."

If you want it to look like Texas (or wherever you're from - why not just stay there? Yes, there are some customs I won't engage in like this post says. But don't be the ugly American. If you want people to all speak English - don't go to Mexico where everyone speaks Spanish. If you have to have a beer or a cocktail every day - don't go to a country where no alcohol is served.

On the other hand, as a woman, I wouldn't go to a place where women are institutionally dissed, like in the Middle East. Won't give 'em my money.

Hopefully I can steer clear of the joints where "wok your dog" has a completely different meaning from "walk your dog."

Yellowstone visitors provoke bison, pay price {Gadling}

Jul 26th 2010 5:11AM Unreal! Especially in America we have a mindset that everything and everywhere is like DisneyLand and we're protected by attorneys and never in danger no matter what. Spill some hot coffee on yourself - no problem, just sue. Not so when Mother Nature is involved. Anything can and does happen. Be careful, folks. Nature is beautiful - but powerful.

Photo of the Day (7.15.10) {Gadling}

Jul 16th 2010 3:19AM I have a picture with the same kind of sunset from one of my trips - it's Istanbul Turkey - so yes, the sunsets look the same.

Got me on that one. I DID think it was a casbah out in the desert.
