Antipsychotics Have Dramatic Consequences in Kids, Study Shows {ParentDish}

Jun 22nd 2011 8:14AM I wish the author would understand what it's like having a child with a psychiatric disorder. It is draining, difficult, sad, stressful, and the same for the child with the disorder. My son, from infancy, had severe behavior problems, was very aggressive (mood would switch on a dime), and could not function in a daycare or school setting. His outbursts were extremely intense. I followed the best parenting advice from experts, but received frequent criticism from other parents and school staff who assumed I wasn't doing enough. One mom actually threatened to kick my a**. All my son wanted is to be like the other kids, to feel "normal." He couldn't control it. It was heartbreaking. He has been on Risperdal for about 4 years now, and it has literally saved him. He is doing very well now, and is so much happier in the world and in himself. Shame on the author for further stigmatizing families dealing with mental health issues by writing things like "crazy pills" and "In other words, your kid acting a little hyper? Bomb him with meds." A "little hyper" would not warrant these drugs. Have some compassion and educate yourself on the issue.

The Doggie Diaries - Should We Be Using a Dog Crate? {Pawnation OLD}

Jul 10th 2010 10:42PM It definitely depends on the dog. My last dog had an awesome temperament - never chewed on anything he wasn't supposed to, was calm, and did great in the house alone, so we never had a need to crate him. My new dog (still a puppy, not quite a year old), even though he's been trained, can't be unsupervised for one minute without getting into trouble. We crate him whenever we're not spending time directly with him, which actually clams him down. The crate is in the room with us, and he's perfectly happy. He should get better as he gets older, but for now, the crate is a blessing for us and him!

I'm Raising My Grandkids And They're Out of Control! {ParentDish}

Apr 25th 2010 10:00PM It's important to remember that all kids are not the same. Some kids with behavioral problems are actually experiencing one of many developmental delays, such as a sensory disorder or cognitive/executive function delays. This can also appear relatively frequently in kids who have experienced emotional trauma of one sort or another. If parenting advice such as this doesn't seem to do the trick, keep a mental log of the types of things or situations that tend to cause frustration for the child. Then, it never hurts to seek an evaluation of the child or advice from an expert. One size does not fit all :-)

Teen's charity name draws the McIre of McDonald's {WalletPop}

Jan 23rd 2010 9:38AM Poor McDonald's. Too bad someone might actually think something positive about them in relation to this charity event supporting Special Olympics. Everyone hates free positive advertising, right? It would be a travesty if someone went to buy a Big Mac because they thought McDonald's was involved in this positive and charitable event. (note sarcasm)
What are they thinking???

Tween Forced to Take Pregnancy Test {ParentDish}

Feb 11th 2009 2:02PM How can a middle school guidance counselor not be familiar with gossip among 12 year old girls?! He should be fired and I hope the parents win their suit, especially so that other young girls won't have to face this type of humiliation.

Didn't take long: Chrysler's $2.99 gas guarantee draws critics {Autoblog Green}

'Superwoman Syndrome' is a serious sickness {That's Fit}

Jul 9th 2007 7:34PM Some women are superwoman by choice, and others by necessity. What's truly important is that we are careful not to judge each other too harshly or too quickly. Most moms (I know not all, but most) are trying to do the right thing for themselves and their families, so kudos to all of you moms who are doing their best!!

Here's why I'm dropping Boston Legal {AOL TV}

Feb 7th 2007 7:47AM I see this as a clever way to write the review. It makes the point that many former fans of the show are losing interest, and fast. I am one of them. Creativity, uniqueness and bite made this show a hit, but there has been such 'sameness' to the show lately to the point of making the show predictable. I used to watch the show because I wondered what would happen next, but now I don't watch it because I feel that I already know what will happen next. It's a shame - this was a very good show.

Cop the Parisian Attitude {Gadling}

Jan 11th 2007 7:25AM I don't think Parisians are any more rude than, for example, New Yorkers. There are several French citizens that have great pride in their country and expect tourists to at least attempt to speak French, while many tourists actually expect them to speak English. This has likely given them an unfairly bad reputation. On the other hand, there are exceptionally friendly French people who are glad to assist a lost tourist or give directions. As with anywhere you go, you'll run across both friendly people and rude people. It would be a shame to miss out on the many wonderful French landmarks because of fear of rudeness.

Are you a "sleepless mom?" {ParentDish}

Oct 21st 2006 6:42AM We should all have a club! :-)
It's important to look at sleep as a necessity rather than as a novelty. This is tough for many of us who by choice and/or necessity put our own needs last, especially when that "perfect schedule" that we dream about seems so far out of reach. Prioritize needs every day - yours, kids, and work - and allow yourself to be a human being with real limitations. If you have resources such as family or friends, there's no shame in asking for help every once in a while. Also, a few minutes a day of exercise works wonders on your health, energy, stress level and self-esteem.
