TUAW review: Sponge for Mac OS X {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Mar 16th 2009 4:48PM I downloaded the full-functioning trial. 'Sponge' has crashed on me twice during the 'disk hog' process. I'm going back to Omni

Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full {Gadling}

Feb 25th 2008 2:57PM There weren't any paying passengers on that jet. It was just some execs. Paine Field is where the 777 is built. As I understand it, the pilot was just picking up the jet to take back to the UK (this was the first flight of the aircraft). It's not as if this guy buzzed the tower at JFK or something.

Southwest Airlines Reaches Decision on Boarding Process {Gadling}

Sep 21st 2007 7:21PM It really goes to show how flawed the SWA system is, when 3rd party web-bots can be hired to game the system. If SWA set up a system where passengers could select their seat when they buy their ticket (as every other airline has done), this silly game of checking in exactly 24 hours before the flight could certainly be avoided.

Southwest Airlines Reaches Decision on Boarding Process {Gadling}

Sep 21st 2007 5:05PM yeah ... Marie, you got it. That's exactly what happened. Justin, I tried to do the 24 hour thing but was denied because I was traveling with a Senior, and the automated system gets confused somehow. If it had been a one time thing, I'd think, "whatever", but it has happened a few times (my biz associate is an old guy, and he's the one who purchases the tix). I am just resigned to the fact that I'll always be sitting in a middle seat when I fly SWA.

I'm still trying to figure out why every other airline that operates in the USA has figured out how to do web/consumer assigned seats for their passengers. This was SWA's chance to get it right. As a regular traveler, this factors high in my decision making (when the choice is given to me, and not by old guy boss!)

Southwest Airlines Reaches Decision on Boarding Process {Gadling}

Sep 19th 2007 6:31PM It is amazing to me, that in this world of automated everything, Southwest cannot figure out how to assign seats. The 24 hour check-in process is flawed. I've been flagged before, because they thought I had tried to buy a "seniors" ticket (I hadn't). Having to clear it up at the airport hours before the flight translates to an automatic "C" boarding pass. I used to put up with this disservice because they had cheap tickets, but today, they are about the same (occasionally more) than the other airlines. I'd rather pay a little extra for an assigned seat and a direct flight.

Stealing Wi-Fi from Airport Lounges {Gadling}

Apr 3rd 2007 5:45PM This is one of my favorite travel tips. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work. This past week I can confirm that the AA Club near gate C19 at DFW didn't bleed any signal at all, and I was sitting just outside the door. Maybe it's all the concrete that is used for the exterior walls of the club.

The Cranky Flier's Look at the A380 {Gadling}

Mar 20th 2007 5:01PM The A-380 is an Airbus, not a Boeing jet. Boeing is working on a 787 aircraft, which will be unveiled on 7/8/07

Beware of "Free Wireless" at the airport -- it may be a scam! {Gadling}

Jan 29th 2007 4:48PM I hate to even give this one away, as I'd hate to see this tip disappear ...

Free Wi-Fi at the airport:
go find the "Perks" lounge offered by the airlines to their best customers. You won't be able to get in (unless you are a big money member), but that doesn't stop the free wi-fi access they offer their members from getting out. And if you are *really* lucky, there will be a coffee shop close enough, so you'll enjoy snacks at the same time you surf the web.

Park Size Graphic {Gadling}

Nov 27th 2006 4:37PM Hello Erik/Gadling,

I created this graphic during the summer, after I had been somewhat inspired by a similar looking graph which appeared in the August '06 edition of National Geographic. The Geographic graph had to do with your odds of dying from any particular cause (cancer to firework accident). I thought it would be interesting to apply the same graphical treatment to National Park related numbers. I'm glad to read that you found it of interest! Thanks.

Friday Funny: Simpsons Episodes {Gadling}

Oct 13th 2006 5:23PM I enjoy the domestic travels of the Simpsons as well. Earlier this this year (March) they took a trip to "Carl's Dad Caverns" - obviously a take off of the name Carlsbad Caverns National Park. That episode was called "The Seemingly Never Ending Story".

An all time favorite for me was when they visited Mt. Useful in the episode called "Mountain of Madness". In this episode, Homer gets trapped in an Avalanche with Mr. Burns. Classic.
