Kids Who Read to Dogs are Better Students {ParentDish}
Jul 16th 2011 8:26AM As a former elementary school counselor now retired, this is something I used to recommend to my young readers. But I had my counselees reading to their cats, hamsters,goldfish, gerbils, whatever. A pet can provide a wonderful sense of nonjudgment that children become willing to risk "looking stupid" while at the same time feeling their pet will love them back regardless.
7 travel rules you should break {Gadling}
Jul 20th 2010 4:17PM You had some great ideas in that article! However, I do save space by skimping on underwear. Instead (especially in Russia and Eastern Europe where they don't often have them) I just bring a rubber sink stopper. Then I can just wring out my undies that evening and I'm good to go the next morning.
Another idea on saving space: bring a folded-up bag along that is made of tough nylon (often called parachute cloth.) It's quite thin when folded yet strong enough to hold lots of items. I'll check my suitcase on the way home and take on my fold-up bag on board now loaded "to the gills" with my new stuff and stow it in the overhead bin.
Why 'Stardoll' Makes Us Really Miss Climbing Trees {Lemondrop}
Jun 30th 2010 9:50AM Watch out! As an old woman now (I'm pushing 70) and proud of it, this reminds me of all we fought against in the second wave of feminism (in the '70's.) This smacks of those days of confronting the constant stereotyping of what boys/men or girls/women could or could not do. It affected all our lives as seen in books, movies, theater and preached from the pulpit. I recall one of the worst was a children's early reader with a picture of a little girl looking sad because her toy broke. The little boy in the picture was shown with the broken toy in one hand and a toy wrench in the other. The caption beneath read: "boys fix things. Girls need things fixed." (sic!)
