TSA Removes X-Ray Body Scanners From Major Airports, But Some Will Remain {Gadling}
Oct 19th 2012 6:41PM Note: Every harmful technology first goes through a period where no one sees any danger. Cumulative effects, sensitive individuals, or those who are predisposed or have other underlying issues, may eventually be affected, if even in a small way. I always "opt-out" and submit to the patdown & swab for explosives. Yes, it's a hassle, and an invasion, but I feel better about it.

Knocked up abroad: applying for a baby's passport {Gadling}
Oct 25th 2011 6:26PM Excellent & helpful! Any useful tips for babies born outside of a hospital, (at home abroad with a non-local midwife)? I have helped with babies in various states, including Hawaii, but I also get requests for my assistance in Greece and Germany, for example.
Snack Food Fails: Weird food names around the world {Gadling}
May 28th 2011 6:04PM It was fun to see theses foods again, since I've eaten most of them in my travels. Collon also comes in green tea flavor and is quite good and not too sweet. Pocari Sweat has a vaguely citrusy flavor and is a great electrolyte replacer when you're dripping in the 90 degree/100% humidity of Japan in July. (Beware: it contains glutamates, in case you're sensitive.) Dickmanns are somewhat like little moon pies, but are actually yummy, with good quallity chocolate and an airy marshmallow middle. (They are sold all over Germany, especially in the cooler months.) Corny is a popular snack bar in Belgium, and also quite good. I've got a bag of ArRashid with a bid-nosed genie springing from a lamp on the package. Inside are peanuts from Czech Repubic to go along with the Tatra beer from Poland. So many goodies, so little time...
Where They Ate: Authors, Eaters, and Food and Travel Writers Tell Their Favorite Eating Experiences of 2010 {Gadling}
Dec 25th 2010 11:21PM Too bad so many commentors are either quibling fools or hawking something...
A few months ago, I was in dining heaven in Victoria, Australia. Morgan's, near St. Kilda (Melbourne), had a $25 Aus dollar lunch special w/ 1/2 doz. oysters and a beautiful fish dish. The dessert Botrytis Semillion from Marlborough was unbelievable - subtly fungusy and honeyed bright. As a freak storm raged outside, I cozied up to the fireplace & spent the afternoon. At the Douglas lake house, in Daylesford, I was too shy to photograph my plate of gorgeous whole fish in front of a room full of other diners, and so I began eating, swooning all the way. Then, when the other diner's plates came, huge professional cameras appeared from under their tables! I went back the next day, it was so amazing.
Round-the-world: Why Melbourne is the best city in the world, part one {Gadling}
Oct 5th 2010 1:19PM I just returned from 3 weeks in Australia, w/ 3 nights in St. Kilda and 3 nights right in Melbourne. (The rest on the Great Ocean Road, Port Fairy, the Grampions, Ballarat, Daylesford, and the Mornington Pensinsula.) Loved it! The food was fresh & fabulous, albeit sometimes surprizingly exensive. Shopping was also more expensive than I had anticipated. This was explained to me as "Aussies generally just don't complain aboout prices." - and that workers are paid living wages, which are reflected in the retail prices, and of course, importation costs. Still there are some good sales, if you look. The quality of the woolens is impressive. People were very friendly and helpful. I felt safe as a solo female traveller. The scene in town, especially at night, was lively, and the scenery in the countryside was stunning. Worth it! Finally, 3 tips: Wotif proved a very useful booking tool for lodging. The little cash-only sushi shops are a real bargain. Bring packing material and leave room in your suitcase to bring back wine!
