When the Stuff Hit the Fan at Pampers {ParentDish}

Jun 25th 2010 10:32AM I have an 8 year old daughter and one who just turned one on June 1st. I used Pampers diapers with my older daughter with no issues whatsoever -- when I tried to save money and buy cheaper brands, I always swore I'd never do it again. Pampers, for whatever reason, just worked the best (never leaked, fit well, etc.). So I never even looked at other diapers when my youngest was born. My husband even bought a large box of Huggies at the Sam's when she was about 6 months old, but I wouldn't use them because I hadn't liked them the first time around.

Until a few months ago when my youngest, who'd never had any problems before, developed a redness that wasn't quite a diaper rash. Even the daycare commented on it -- it wasn't a normal diaper rash and wasn't like my child to get one. I use diaper ointment with every change as a preventive measure (I use Aquaphor, as recommended by the pediatrician). And yet this redness persisted. Now, it never got much beyond being red and a bit sensitive to her, but it just wouldn't go away. Then I started hearing through the media about the issue with Pampers. I scoffed at first because, well, it's Pampers. Pampers are awesome! But I decided to do a little experiment: I opened up that huge box of Huggies my husband had gotten from Sam's and started using those instead. I switched out the diapers at the daycare. And guess what? The redness went away after about 3 or 4 days.

Maybe the continued use of the Aquaphor helped clear it up, finally. Or maybe it was the diapers causing it. I don't know. But I do know that I no longer buy Pampers diapers and my daughter has had no more recurrence of the redness.

SmackDown: Did Air Traffic Dad Really Do Anything So Wrong? {ParentDish}

Mar 8th 2010 9:42AM My husband is a pilot for a major airline and he told me that hearing a child on the ATC frequency would be no big dea at the hand-off point (which this was) because the instructions the pilots are getting are ones the pilots already know. It's just a confirmation that everyone is on the same page, so to speak -- part of their many check lists to ensure that things are done in the proper order. He also complains often about some air traffic controllers who are very difficult to understand because of accents or speaking super fast, making the pilot's job that much more difficult and dangerous because now he's got to interpret what he was told. This child's clear enunciation would have been a blessing at some airports, or so I'm told by someone who's actually in a position to fully understand this situation.

Don't even ask my husband what it's like when he goes to Mexico or other destinations south of the border, where the procedures vary widely from what the FAA requires . . . he assures me there is going to be a bad accident down there soon. And there won't be any children involved to pin the blame on.

Galley Gossip: The Bachelor - pilots, fashion & a few pilot fashion tips {Gadling}

Feb 3rd 2010 3:17PM Is it possible for me to e-mail this to my pilot husband without him knowing I'm the one who sent it? Because I've seen him pack his flight bags and I KNOW he's guilty of a few of those on the 'Don't' list. At home he asks me about his clothes when we're going out or something, but he's on his own when he's on a trip . . . And here's a question: Have you ever seen a pilot on his way to or from work when he's had to stop at a gas station or something where he has to get out of the car? My husband says he and most of his pilot buddies take off their uniform shirt and will pull on whatever's on top in their bag to avoid the looks and stares of the curious. He says the pilots who are into being pilots (these are the ones who mention what they do every 5 seconds or so in a conversation) are the only ones who'll wear their entire uniform in public outside of the airport.

Great post, Heather! And bravo to Bob the singing pilot for attempting to help his comrades out.
