Photo Of The Day: Seeing Mona Lisa {Gadling}
Apr 12th 2013 1:22PM I took an exact same photo just last week at the Louvre! It was amazing how many people would crowd about in front of Mona Lisa trying to take a close up picture, but would simply walk past most of the other exhibits around.
Tom Stuker becomes first frequent flyer to pass 10 million miles, United celebrates {Gadling}
Jul 11th 2011 12:36PM I'm a total aviation geek and get a "high" each time I board an aircraft.. the magic that I experienced when I first flew as a child has stayed and I certainly do wish to be able to fly much often than I currently do. However, when I read stories such as these, and look at the big picture, I cannot help but wonder what all these Bingham-like folks must've given up in terms of time they couldn't spend with their loved ones or just not having done more of things that really matter..
Airlines would obviously love for frequent fliers to be obsessed with such "milestones", but I'd rather spend the better part my time doing things that are more meaningful for me and for those around me.
Global Soap Project uses hotel soap to save lives {Gadling}
Jun 18th 2011 9:14AM McLean, this is a very interesting and positive story, but I'm going to have to play a spoil-sport here..
While the folks who began the project have their hearts at the right place, the strategy they've adopted appears short-sighted. When you ship used soap from all across the country to a central warehouse (and then beyond to other countries), you've got to take into account the total carbon emissions footprint of transporting the stuff. And then there is the energy and water intensiveness of the soap processing (sanitization, chilling and recutting) - all of which arguably requires huge amounts of water, energy and other resources. Taking into account all these inputs, the reprocessed soap is going to be highly highly unsustainable from an environmental perspective. Whatever activity we do now or in the future, no matter how big or small, we've got to take into account its environmental impact on a life cycle basis.. considering all the externalities.
Goes without saying that it's a shame that hotel guests in our country use a new soap every morning when there are million others in the world who do not have access to basic hygiene necessities. We need to think out of the box if this problem is to be solved sustainably. Would'nt it be a better idea to help build low-cost soap factories in poor countries (cut down on emissions from international shipping and local employment generation) instead of sending soap from here? also, how about we make all our hotels change their procedures and not provide daily replacements unless specifically requested? I've always believed it is better to cut down on the generation of waste in the first place than to try and recycle is later (most people either dont know or chose to ignore that recylcing is such an energy-intensive process).
My best wishes to Derreck and his team.
Cockpit Chronicles: A farewell to Boston {Gadling}
Jun 18th 2011 8:47AM The Northern Lights shot is superb! Having flown several times on very long-haul flights from the Middle-east to the US that take a very northernly route, I've often been frustrated by the (very strict) flight attendant instructions to keep the window shades down at all times. I mean I understand open shades might mess with the cabin's ambient darkness and folks trying to catch some sleep, but for a space enthusiast like myself who has always wanted to see the Lights, just imagine all those lost opportunities :( I envy you pilots that way...
Can you tell me which routes and times of the year have been the best in terms of viewing opportunities, from your experience? Thanks - Nick
