Plane Answers: JFK kid controller incident and a smoking 757 {Gadling}
Mar 4th 2010 10:02AM I found this to be humorous, entertaining, and a way to relieve stress. Air Traffic Controllers are known to live short lives, due to stress. They have the most "per hourly" breaks than any other profession simply due to the shear stress and anxiety that their job comes with. Having a kid sign over an aeromexico flight to departure is just a way to relieve stress for everyone involved.
United Airlines channel 9, which allows you to listen in to ATC/Cockpit transmissions is a great tool to hear all of the stress relievers that ATC and pilots use daily. For instance, this is just another example of the famous JFK controller's "SEE YEAH!". Is THAT FAA protocol? absolutely not! Does he get in trouble... NOPE!.
Once, while on a UA flight sitting in a ground delay at JFK about 15th in line of about 25 for departure, i was listening to channel 9 and a pilot of another aircraft came over the dead silent ground frequency and shouted, "IM F***ing BORED!". The ATC controller responded, "Identity yourself immediately". And the pilot said back, "Im f***ing bored, not f***ing stupid!". How is this ANY wrose, than a child being told exactly what to say, while an adult is whispering it in his ear. And if you listen to the recording, that child was speaking more clearly that do MOST jfk tower personnel.
All in all, i got a good chuckle out of this.

The meals you see the flight attendants eating are THERE crew meals. Most airlines will have there crew members, pilots included, order which meal they want for the entire month. They get the SAME thing every time they fly, and trust me...it ain't as good as that fruit plate you had to "settle" for.
So, even if they flight attendant had not wanted there meal that day, you STILL would not have received it, simply because it was not meant for customers.
Plane Answers: Civilian vs. military pilot — which one is better? {Gadling}
Dec 30th 2009 1:44AM i discussed this with my dad, and he agrees he was definitely a part of a crew. he flew and commanded p-3's and sometimes was responsible for up to 15 people.
he says it is very similar to being an international captain at a civilian airliner, except your layover locations are a bit different. ;)

Galley Gossip: The first class / orange juice passenger responds to what happened in flight {Gadling}
Dec 12th 2009 4:05PM I'm glad to hear we have cleared the air on this issue, well, at least for the time being. I fly at least 15 times a year, usually non-rev (airline pilot for a father) and i have simply gotten used to being overly polite, friendly, and helpful with any and all airline staff. I have found this to be a valuable tool, just recently, flying full revenue to come home for thanksgiving vacation i struck up a conversation with a flight attendant in the aft galley of the plane, we talked about her long day and the fact that she had another leg to fly after the 6 hour one we were already on! I empathized with her, and it eventually came up that my father was an employee for the airline, and she said she had a feeling seeing as how i was being so polite (even though i was still a full paying customer). she offered me whatever free BOB (buy on board) food i wanted.
This just goes to show that all flight attendants are not stereotyped correctly... customers just do not realize the stress that is put on them every day. smile once and a while, strike up a conversation, you'll be surprised at what happens.
great job clearing the air on this one heather!
