Four reasons airlines blame passengers for their current woes {Gadling}

Sep 14th 2010 12:04PM Thanks, I have to admit I've been chuckling all morning. Even so, there are some serious points here, and I believe that it benefits no one to have a sick airline industry, and that if the industry in its infancy had all these fees and policies, then probably people wouldn't be so put out by them today. Hotels charge for internet access, restaurants charge for Diet Cokes, cruise lines have cover charges for their premium restaurants.

But it's true that Southwest seems to be making money, and they're not fee-happy. I think the other airlines look upon Southwest as the golden child of the industry, and wish they could all be like it; but then, if they all emulated Southwest there'd be no international flights, no first class, no jumbo jets. So who knows.

British Airways' re-launched First is worth every mile {Gadling}

Jun 9th 2010 1:07PM Thanks :) I guess "doesn't fly much" is relative, eh?

British Airways' re-launched First is worth every mile {Gadling}

Jun 9th 2010 12:29PM Well, Nick, let's say I don't fly much as I used to when I was a freelance travel writer doing four trips a month :) Last month, I flew New York to SFO, then took Amtrak to PDX, then PDX to SFO to JFK; also flew JFK/LAX roundtrip (2 nights), JFK/LAS roundtrip (4 nights); plus 36 hours in London (JFK/LHR); this month I'm doing JFK/LCY, JFK/LAX/LGB/JFK, and LGA/MIA. As I said, when you're pushing 60, you just don't wanna be in the air that much! I've been a travel writer for 30 years and covered the airline industry for about that long. I wish you many enjoyable journeys and always appreciate your insightful comments!

A modest proposal: Let's ban large carry-ons altogether {Gadling}

Apr 20th 2010 6:42PM A friend of mine opened an overhead bin, and his suitcase fell out midflight, hitting someone on the head. Result: $50,000 law suit, which luckily his homeowners insurance covered. But it was a pain. Literally and figuratively.

Once a free perk, many airlines now charge for advanced seat selection {Gadling}

Where did all the bargain fares to Europe go? {Gadling}

Mar 17th 2010 9:04AM There are a few "relative bargains" here and there. For example, AerLingus.com is selling Boston to Barcelona right now on its site only (not on Orbitz, ITASoftware etc) for $571 rt including tax for travel midweek in April.

Mar 4th 2010 11:00AM Probably not cheaper. Sign up for alerts! We are betting that fares to Germany will come down at some point. When they do, pounce on them!

Mar 2nd 2010 10:39AM Also, I just did a search for Singapore to Bangkok on Vayama, using a one way flight on Mar 16. Now, I know that Air Asia flies this route so I was wondering if Vayama would list flights on that airline. Nope. I got results ranging from $318 USD to $576 USD! On Air Asia, 78 SGD including tax. That's $55 USD! I'm not sure if there's a really great site for finding low cost carrier fares in Asia. Mobissimo did a better job on this route at $80 USD on something called Air Cargo Express. Does that mean I fly in cargo?! But still not as good as going directly to Air Asia. Zuji.com, a Travelocity-owned Asian site, is better than Vayama for Asia. But as is often the case, online travel agencies and even some meta search engines do not list airline-site-only deals.

Mar 2nd 2010 10:30AM Good point, although Momondo and DoHop are not US-centric. They're based overseas. Vayama often sells consolidator tickets at tempting prices.
