Dos and Don'ts in the developing world {Gadling}

Feb 23rd 2010 12:19AM Excellent summarization, Sean.

I'd add another point or two. First, people often ask me if it's okay to wear their fake Rolex or imitation diamond earrings. My point is not that those items might be stolen; rather, that by wearing them (or anything else flashy), you send signals to those who want what they think you have. If they think you look wealthy (and you do!) they may think it's worth their while to stake you out and wait for (or create) an opportunity to get your wallet or purse. They can't tell the costume or counterfeit stuff is fake.

Secondly, most people are just not travel-savvy. In their towns, it might be perfectly okay to hang a bag on the back of a chair in a cafe, or put it on the ground. They just don't have theft on their minds. That's why your recommendation to wear valuables on the body under the clothes is so good.
