Recession reveals Baby Boomer travel limits {Gadling}
Jun 6th 2010 7:22PM We all agree that there is no surprise in the study that shows a huge drop in travel among boomers during the recession. But the study doesn't show the whole picture.
One way boomers are traveling differently than older generations is that they're pulling up stakes and going for months, or even years, at a time. They don't show up in statistical studies such as this one because they take fewer trips with that have discreet arrival and departure dates. Rather, they just keep going.
We've met many boomers who began traveling before the recession hit (we've been going non-stop since 2006) and haven't stopped - or found ways to stop in other countries, make a little money, and then continue traveling.
They aren't the majority of travelers -- but more and more boomers are choosing to see the world this way as its cheaper as long as they have the time. Instead of retiring, many are moving to portable careers with the help of the internet or their English-language (teaching) skills.
