Many of the Business Improvement Districts (called BIDs) sponsor free tours once a week - find them by googling the name of the area you might be interested in touring. The Times Square tour is on Fridays at 12:00 in front of the Times Square Visitor Center, for example. Or you can take a free podcast walking tour.
