The Perks of Brewing Versus Buying Coffee -- Savings Experiment {WalletPop}

Jan 28th 2011 3:23AM I used to use Maxwell House. When they "improved" it, that is, made it cheaper by abandoning the recipe that was formulated over years by a great restaurateur, the coffee that showed that coffee need not be bitter.
Then they came out with the classic recipe renamed "1892" and sold it for a little more but in a full 1 pound can. That did not last because people did not understand the actual cost so Maxwell House discontinued this after a few years.
Now I use Chock Full O' Nuts, another classic coffee from the time before people discovered that coffee was supposed to be bitter, burned and strong enough to make money for the antacid companies. I DO NOT drink Starbucks. In fact, when I am in an airport with no other choice but Starbucks, I spend $2.75 on a bottle of water.
As for my brewing, when I make 12 6 oz. cups in my automatic Mr. Coffee machine, I wet the filter to reduce absorption, add 6 tablespoons of coffee, 2 rounded, 4 level. Even at 11.5 oz per can, I get about 10 pots per can or 60 MUGS of coffee. (C'mon! What wussie drinks a teacup of coffee????) Since I wait for a sale, I pay an average of $1.75 per can. Now that we are comparing a large coffee to a large coffee (a flaw in the computation of this article) my coffee costs me $0.02917 per cup....less than 3 cents! And no one complains that my coffee is weak or lacks flavor.

10 ways to survive a Russian winter vacation {Gadling}

Jan 16th 2011 8:32PM Jan...Wussy! You know, there is a reason Russia has been around since 1147, the founding of Moscow. The Russians have a long proud history. There may have times of trouble but they have existed as a country longer than the Roman Empire and held more land as well!

Jimbo, Russians only do Vodka shooters when they want to get stupid Americans drunk! They tried it on me. I outsmarted them, switching to wine and then swigging right from the bottle...only it was a brown bottle I filled with water....
Holding your own, ANYwhere means using your head.

John, GOOD IDEA! Stay here & be miserable! Russians can be wonderful, happy people even in the face of hardships or bitter winter weather. I don't think they nee your poor attitude.

Just be sure YOU cook if you are invited to a BBQ...Russians think juice is blood and you must cook steaks until it is gone. Unless you are a barbarian who likes beef cooked like shoe leather, that is.

As for the Russian people, I am a total mutt...Italian, Austrian, Irish, Scot & Welsh. I found Russians charming, intelligent, interesting, welcoming and friendly. In fact, I like Russians so well I brought home a wife instead of a souvenir!

You know, I did meet some Russians who were anti-American. I considered them as ignorant as Anti-Russians here. Do you realize that if not for the Russian army, we might be speaking German? Before we were enemies, we were allies. We are supposed to be allies again now. GROW UP!

Opinion: Sometimes, It's OK to Let Your Kid Be Bullied {ParentDish}

Oct 23rd 2010 11:35AM When my daughter was small there was a boy in the neighborhood who had a problem controlling his hands. He would hit everyone in the group of children who lived near us.

This was before "Play Dates" and such. Our children could play in our yard without costant observation.

When this boy's behavior became a bit offensive, I went to the local store and bought an infltable clown doll with sand in the bottom. These were made to be hit by children to allow them to release aggression and young frustration.

At first, naturally, she hit "like a girl", which was normanl. However, with a bit of coaching and practice, she learned a pretty good jab and a GREAT roundhouse.

She took the doll outside and hen her little friends arrived she said proudly, "Wanna see what my daddy taught me?". She proceeded to nail the clown a good one. The boy turned a bit pale and never hit her again.

What is that about a good defense again?????

The Modern-Day General Store {Shelterpop}

Sep 12th 2010 1:29PM Mmarie,

New Caanan, PA...2 gas stations, one empty corner, and lastly, General Store with barbershop and in back, the Post Office. This is the town near where Pattie Hearst hid out in the safe house...I know because I was a Boy Scout camping 7 miles away. I don't recall suffering any raids by local Native Americans...:< )))))

The Modern-Day General Store {Shelterpop}

Sep 12th 2010 1:23PM Folks,

WalMart & Home Depot did not kill the Mom & Pops....people who GO to Big Box store did! I can go to any huge store I want. They are all around me in North Jersey. Instead, I have a small lumber yard I use. I get better wood.
I have an old fashioned 5&10 that is associated with a large hardware chain but privately owned. Some of the stuff is Chinese...so I skip that.
I make food and can it. I have oil lamps for when heavy winds knock out power, I don't eat out more than once a week, make my own lunch.
When the USA regains the values that made us strong, we will be strong again...Let's go the the GENERAL STORE....as long as it is a MOM & POP!

May 7th 2010 7:58AM My wife is a registered legal alien. We married 2 years ago this August and she has here green card. She has a pronounced accent and has NEVER been harrassed or had her rights violated. If there was any question, she would simply show proof of legitimate entry and that would be it.
I am so sick of bigots of color playing the race card!
I teach in the inner city and have all races of children as my students. Some of them are illegals. I am aware of it. I willtry and getlegal status for any I can help. But those who are active criminals? They sent Mafia leaders back to Italy for years. No one cried about being a bigot against Italians! Is it okay to attack Italians because they are white? Only people of color have extra rights?
NOBODY has the right to come here illegally (that is what Illeal means folks!) and then commit crimes!!!!
