Apr 29th 2010 6:55AM It was the government that caused the housing crisis by forcing finance companies under threat of prosecution to make loans to those who couldn't pay them back, all under the guise of the Community Reinvestment Act, the purpose of which was to "provide affordable housing". The government then assured those institutions that they would cover if the loans defaulted. This scheme took the risk out of private lending, causing the players to act recklessly and irrationally. Goldman merely traded the investment vehicles that consisted of those bad loans repackaged by Frannie and Freddie.
The culprits were Andrew Cuomo as HUD under Clinton, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and Franklin Raines (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac).

These are the people that should be prosecuted! The government needs to get out and stay out of the private sector to prevent more of these occurrences. The only role of government should be regulation to protect investors and then oversight of the markets. The regulations were already in place and sufficient but, as proven in the first video, it was the Congressional oversight that was severely lacking.

The salaries at our airline are still pretty good, with wide body captains making $220-250K and first officers around $135-165K. There are many pilots who are negative about the industry, but since I have worked in the military for 21 years and did some time as a civilian for a major defense contractor as a contracts administrator, I maintain it is the "best part-time job I have ever had". Our schedules permit about 15 days per month off and it is possible to supplement your income by other means-for a few years I did real-estate appraisal work, and others are realtors, lawyers, doctors, small business owners, etc.

We are in this mess because of Democrat policies--no drilling for oil in the face of rising worldwide demand, forcing financial institutions to give loans to those unable to pay them back, and refusing oversight on financial institutions like FNMA--ALL DEMOCRAT POLICIES and Obama is continuing most of them. Yet the story line in the media is that somehow Bush's policies (though they can't name which ones) caused our current economic woes--INCREDIBLE!!!
