I too have lived near the Ohio River (Southern Indiana)and I can tell you that the reason coal is shipped both directions is COST. It costs far less to ship by barge than it does by rail or by truck. Your assertion that those in the North or South should get their coal locally is absurd. There are not large quantities of coal reserves in either location. I'm curios though as to where along the Ohio River you live.

Jul 12th 2009 5:58PM I am originally from Indiana, so we have places there like French Lick, Bear Branch, Stone Head and Gnaw Bone along with odd names like Loogootee, Quercus Grove, Twelve Mile and Santa Claus.
Texas, where I live now has some interesting ones like Cumby (whose HS teams go by the name of Trojans-my all-time favorite), Muleshoe, Lazbuddie, Frognot, Dumas, Knippa, Iraan and Corpus Christi.
