May 30th 2012 4:23PM Hah. This whole thing made me laugh. I will agree that the safety issue is very important. But otherwise, who cares? When I see someone who is obviously a tourist in my city I go out of my way to see if I can help them enjoy their visit. So do all of the people I know. Only a snob cares about whether they are carrying their stuff in a fanny pack or a trendy back pack. And excuse me but people in most countries wear sandals during the warm weather. And many of them wear socks. Either to keep the crud off their feet or because it got a little chilly. Next time you're in Rome take a look around. My guess is that this piece was written by an older person who is proud of being a "savvy traveller"
