An Odyssey Ending For The Backseat Atlas {Gadling}

May 9th 2013 10:58AM Sad story. We need more map stores.

Gadling published a great article a few months back about how traveling has become "following the purple line" on a GPS or Smart Phone. How the area outside that line has become non-existent for most people.

A paper map is one of the most spectacular items available for traveling. You can find a decent place to stop for a nosh or night. You can find those little out of the way places that most people never find. (one of my favorites is Goblin Valley State Park in Utah, but you will have to have a map to find it!)

A paper map is also useful as a memory of the trip you take. When talking about your Safari to Botswana, it helps to be able to pull out the map of that country to show people exactly where you were. It also will bring back memories of the time in Bolivia, when the truck broke down and you were stranded for three days, but the locals put you up, helped you get the truck running and sent you on your way.

Also sad it the closure of a small business that the owner's obviously loved and one that provided the community with a service that many looked for.

Holiday Inn Or Hampton Inn? Trying To Decode Priceline's Star Ratings System {Gadling}

Apr 14th 2013 8:27PM I have also found Priceline's Star Rating baffling at times. Heck, all ratings are subjective from any source. After all the Burj Dubai gives itself a 7* out of 5.

One thing that does seem to affect Priceline's ratings that seems obvious but I doubt if they ever would admit to it. The Difference between a 2* and a 2 1/2* is usually a free breakfast, maybe continental, but often including the omnipresent Waffle Machine. If a property does not have this it seems that it will only be a 2*.

It also seems that they set their ratings based on the zone. That is they will give the highest rating in a zone to a 2.5 * hotel simply because the "environment" of that zone is lower than the downtown business district. So you can get something like an aLoft as a 3* where if were located in another zone it might be a 4*.

Bidding for travel is good, Betterbidding.com is better.

Photo Of The Day: Mount Revelstoke National Park View {Gadling}

Mar 16th 2013 10:11PM We also enjoyed the drive up Mt. Revelstoke. Although if we had been warned we would have been better prepared for the summer trip. The Black Flies in the Alpine environment were some of the worst that I have ever endured. It made it difficult to even get out of the car to hike around.
If you go. Go Prepared with your choice of insect repellent. Then you can really enjoy the views as pictured above.

IKEA To Launch Budget Hotel Chain In Europe {Gadling}

Mar 9th 2013 8:48PM Living in an IKEA sounds alright. They have beds, blankets, towels, Swedish Meatballs (with or without Horsemeat) and Lingonberries. All is right with the world.

Crazy Airplane Landing Captured On Video {Gadling}

Dec 15th 2012 8:37PM Seems like a guy who is in complete control of his airplane and knows the capabilities of his craft.

And with skydivers, the pilot knows to get the heck out of the area as quickly as possible. Which is what he did.

Presidential Road Trips You Can Take This Weekend {Gadling}

Oct 20th 2012 12:14AM Anyone else find it strange that 7-11 is asking you to buy Coffee to cast your vote for Romney. Doesn't his religion sort of frown on Caffeine?

Are Airlines Risking The Lives Of Allergy Sufferers? {Gadling}

Oct 10th 2012 10:09AM While I understand the problem of Peanut Allergy, the study seemed to quite limited in scope. Only 32 subjects--all with the allergy is not a valid statistical sample.

The story did not mention the precautions that the subjects took other than telling the airline in advance (in the case of the walnut in the salad) or the Flight Attendant on board.

If you have a severe peanut allergy that would affect your travel, you should be proactive in your own prevention.
That would include epipens, face mask, long sleeved clothes, and wipes to wipe down the seat that you would be sitting in.

Remember that you also have other people on the plane. Those may include people with hypoglycemia, who often will need a candy bar during a flight to keep their blood sugar up. Most of those candy bars will contain some peanut material. What about someone who has just eaten a Thai Restaurant or has been to a professional Sports Game. They probably have some peanut dust.

It is not realistic to assume that the Airline or Travel provider will be able to prevent exposure to peanuts.

That is up to the person with the allergy. It is called taking responsibility for your own condition.

Let's Bring Capitalism To America's Beaches {Gadling}

Sep 25th 2012 12:09AM I sort of agree with Joel. The National Seashore should be kept fairly undisturbed. It appears that the problem is with parking. They need to take a page from the National Parks out here in the west and provide shuttles from remote parking to the beach.
At Yosemite, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon they have developed remote parking and shuttles to the important places.
That technique would allow people to take their ice chests, chairs etc. to the beach.

The west is also working at removing plastic water bottles from the parks. So the seashore should have multiple recycling bins around.

A Traveler In The Foreign Service: Thoughts On The Murder Of 4 American Diplomats In Libya {Gadling}

Sep 14th 2012 12:43AM I am sorry for all of the FSO community's loss.

Like Ellen said, when I heard of this, my first thought was of you. I was hoping that you were not one of the fatalities.

My sympathy to the families and friends left behind.

Killing The Pig: The Annoying Foodie Obsession With Pork {Gadling}

Aug 10th 2012 10:50AM How about we just go back to Meat (from any Source) and plain old white potatoes. Maybe a green salad with a tomato or two.

But if we did that what would happen to the Celebrity Chefs. Oh yeah, they might just go back to cooking decent food instead.
