Big Ship Cruises Not For You? New Cruise Line Has You In Mind {Gadling}
May 21st 2013 8:52PM Roglee,
That's heartening! I'd love to hear what where you embarked and disembarked, if you're willing to share. And I've heard other good things about Viking -- it was just off-putting (a good choice of words, thanks) to see them ignoring a segment that might appreciate what they have to offer.
Might be time to go back to Europe...
Big Ship Cruises Not For You? New Cruise Line Has You In Mind {Gadling}
May 19th 2013 6:07PM In fact, these cruises hold a lot of appeal for me -- but too bad they're for the septuagenarians. I've seen ads for the river cruises online and they have everything a spring chicken like me (in my early 40s -- so yes, tongue in cheek on the spring chicken comment) ...a spring chicken like me looks for. I'd love to take a cruise focused on culture, history, art and food (and without the carnival rides, screaming children or "floating city" syndrome). Unfortunately, and frankly, Viking's ads make me a little angry: do they really think that only the 70+ crowd is interested in such things? Time to think a little more deeply, Viking.
I look forward to Viking's "oceans" offering, too. If they sound good enough, maybe I'll even think about climbing on board, if they'll have a youngin' like me.
Conservatives, Pack Your Bags! Liberal-Free Travel Has Arrived {Gadling}
Mar 6th 2013 11:54AM Chase has created a "club" that villainizes a segment of his constituency's population -- based on stereotypes, no less -- and he's the one that's tolerant, thoughtful and open minded? I hope the conservatives I know, who actually are open minded and thoughtful, see this for what it is and give him exactly what he should receive: no business whatsoever.
Storing Travel Photos, Let Us Count The Ways {Gadling}
Oct 3rd 2012 7:20AM One note about Facebook and services like them: make *sure* you read the terms of use before you upload your pictures, as the copyright and licensing agreements might not be to your liking. Facebook's terms, for instance, include the following clause:
"For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook"
If you're not comfortable giving Facebook full license to your photographs, don't add them there.
Also, sites like Facebook will reduce the quality and resolution of your photographs when you upload them. The picture they display is NOT the one you uploaded!
A dedicated site like Flickr is, by far, the better way to go. Their interface is dedicated to showing photographs, for one thing, they don't alter your photographs -- and they don't have (what I consider to be) onerous terms of use. Personally, I use Flickr to display and Amazon cloud storage to back up. It has been working well for me for years.

GPS devices on flights? Maybe {Gadling}
May 8th 2011 1:44PM It might be interested to see what devices work and which don't. A number of them will stop displaying data if it appears that the device is traveling at more than a certain speed -- to keep them from being used by pilots aboard airplanes, since the majority of consumer-available devices are not approved for cockpit use by the FAA.
How to deal with jetlag {Gadling}
Dec 29th 2009 12:16PM I also have to strongly disagree with the suggestion that you sleep during the day if you're tired and in a new time zone, and that you stay up 'til the wee hours if you can't sleep at night. It's possibly the *worst* thing to do, in fact: You'll make sure that your body does not acclimate to the offset pattern of light & dark. Instead, get to sleep when local time says go to sleep (*don't* hit the bars until 4am!) and try to stay awake during the day.

Five ways to avoid a chatty passenger {Gadling}
Oct 1st 2009 11:32AM Why is "be direct" last on the list, and why be indirect at all? It IS possible to politely tell someone that you're not in the mood to talk -- and not play games by looking preoccupied (doing things that you didn't want to do in the first place, no less), acting like a terse jerk (by only giving short answers) or hiding in plain sight with your magazine.
This article makes no sense to me.
