Review: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans {Cinematical}
Jan 23rd 2009 8:11PM just was UW3 today, enjoyed it, defn a movie, not a film, tons of fun. despite knowing his name, didn't twig to fact that Sheen plays both Lucian and Frost. really interesting to see two such diverse performances from one person.
Polanski Rape Case Twist: Victim Criticizes LA DA {Cinematical}
Jan 13th 2009 2:38PM 'alleged' misconduct. and even if everything claimed in that documentary is true, that still does not excuse what he did, or the fact that he fled, and remains a fugitive. remember, he admitted to his crimes. what he did to that child is NOT in dispute, including not by him.
Polanski Rape Case Twist: Victim Criticizes LA DA {Cinematical}
Jan 13th 2009 2:03PM Polanski did not flee the jurisdiction to avoid prosecution, he fled after being convicted of an especially nasty crime - oral, vaginal and anal sex forced upon a 13 year old who he fed a combination of champagne and quaaludes. More accurately, that's what he did, but he was able to plead to a lesser crime.
Originally he was charged with "rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor", he plead guilty to "engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor." This is all documented and is not in dispute.
In a 2003 interview, the victim said: ""Straight up, what he did to me was wrong. But I wish he would return to America so the whole ordeal can be put to rest for both of us." Furthermore, "I'm sure if he could go back, he wouldn't do it again. He made a terrible mistake but he's paid for it"."
How exactly has he paid for anything? He sits in Europe like a king, avoiding countries that have extradition agreements with either USA or UK, filing and winning lawsuits in American courts for things like 'defamation of character' (against Vanity Fair), as he continues to thumb his nose and avoid his prison sentence for raping a kid while collecting filmmaking awards and honours, including the Oscar and Palme d'Or.
And the fact that so many Hollywood 'stars' jump at the chance to work with him is disgusting and disturbing (Harrison Ford, Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan - are you listening?). He's managed to turn his victim into a supporter and blame the police and the prosecutors for his situation.
How exactly does an escaped convicted pedofile felon manage all this? Because - besides lacking a moral center - he's rich and is counting on the passage of time and failing memories. Someone needs to bring this evil rabid dog down. Child molesters belong in prison.
Dell announces new Latitude E series {Engadget}
Aug 12th 2008 2:28PM i'm still waiting on the 'netbooks'. Dell is taking their sweet time on releasing those to the point of being ridiculous with the timeline. are they worried about cannabalizing back-to-school sales? i have a fully-loaded XPS1210 with an extended batter, and despite it not being huge like my brother's 17" screen laptop behomoth, i really want one of the 8.9" mini-lappies for j-school which starts 1st Monday of 2nd week of September. talk about cutting it close.
yesterday i saw an Acer Aspire One in the wilds (at a Starbucks in Toronto, Canada), and persuaded user to let me touch it. i asked for the store name where he bought it and found they had some left stock for 350/375 bucks for linux, and 400/425 for win xp (what i consider the 'right price' for this sort of thing). knowing it was a street car ride away, it was really tough not to go and pick one up today.
still, if Dell makes me wait much longer, might go with the Aspire anyway. Sapphire Blue.
Skype adds Call ID for United States users {Download Squad}
Jun 6th 2008 2:56PM Well, Brad, I guess that if a Canadian were to use an American Skype number, for example I live in Toronto (416/905) and I could sign up for a Buffalo area code or some such border city, they could have this new service too, but I'd be paying for long distance costs and so would people calling me. It's pretty annoying that there aren't any Canadian area codes. It's the ONLY reason I don't have a Skype-in number yet.
Still, I did recently grab the great deal for unlimited calling to any landline or mobile phone in Canada or the States. $2.95 a month for up to 10 000 minutes a month. Signed up for a full year and saved 33%. Caveat: I'll have to watch carefully next year if I don't want to go ahead and repeat with the deal as they have negative option billing on it.

Jun 6th 2008 2:42PM When one uses the term 'North America' correctly, it means Canada AND the United States. So far, we Canadians can't even get a skype number with a Canadian area code, and we're been asking for years.
More feedback on my talk at the Affiliate Summit yesterday. {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Feb 27th 2008 8:26AM @John. I should have been more specific: When I say 'net marketers', I don't mean major companies, I mean individual people clawing for a piece of the online pie. Mostly, they have nothing to offer with their MFA (made for Adsense sites).
And I think that most reading my comments would clearly understand that distinction. Claiming that there are just a few bad apples negates the reality of the garbage these people spew while trying to game the various advertising systems, and not just Google.
I mean, come on, they use software programs to endlessly rewrite articles that they bought for a few bucks. And thousands of people are buying these articles (white label) and putting up tons and tons of sites, hence the problem of duplicate content. Then they use more software programs to spam blog, forums and groups.
I have a few quality content sites that have been around for awhile, once since 1990, and I get a lot software-generated requests for links, dozens and dozens a day.

Feb 26th 2008 8:12PM Jason, you were probably a lot nicer than you had to be.
I would say that the bulk of 'net marketers' make garbage sites that pollute the internet. Not to mention their on-going efforts to spam blogs, forums and groups. It's not about whether they are nice people or not, no doubt most of them are, but that doesn't change what they are doing - spawning crapola - or make it smell better.
A smaller, more smarmy group make (aka 'gurus') and push 'products' to gullible people on their mailing lists and their co-conspirators mailing lists which will supposedly make them the next internet millionaire. They real them in with free ebooks that don't really reveal anything, and which they make them give up their email addresses to get, all to build large lists to try and sell to.
Of course, these buyers seem not to get that the way these so-called experts get rich is by selling this over-priced stuff to them, and promoting the crap of a select insider group for large commissions.
Time after time, they fleece these people by pushing stuff with the promise that this will be the one product, service, seminar, etc that will reveal the so-called secret of making real money online and retiring next year. It's classic snake oil stuff with a new skin for a new age.
