Apr 15th 2009 5:42PM The rudder slows the plane down? That's a funny one. Perhaps it was supposed to refer to landing flaps... but as GURU says, that's the kind of thing you'd only worry about after you were in contact with someone appropriate. The rudder isn't really needed for someone flying a plane for the first time.
There was a Mythbusters episode where Adam and Jaimie got to try flying a jet simulator without any training for this scenario where the plane's pilots all die or get sick. The both crashed it. Then they got assistance from a pseudo air traffic controller on the radio, and were able to land the jet successfully (using autopilot and autoland). So it's certainly possible... though in this case, the reason for success was mostly Mr. White's previous pilot experience.
