A Break With Tradition -- 'I Chose Not to Have My Dad Give Me Away' {Lemondrop}

May 4th 2010 5:51AM When I was getting married my father showed little to no interest in my wedding. I had asked him to walk me down and he agreed but getting him to partake of his duties didn't seem to interest him, he was more concerned about his second wife of 6mos then me. So, since I had been living on my own and was supporting myself I dis-invited him with the excuse of being self-supporting and that I didn't require him to escort me as it was rather a silly tradition. His response was oh, okay! Of course, as his only daughter I was very hurt that he didn't object or tell me how he looked forward to this day. The night before my wedding I was getting jittery and deceided to ask a close family friend to escort me down the aisle since this same gentleman was the person who drove my mother to hospital for my impending birth all those years earlier. Needless to say my father and I were estrange for a few years but life is life. Sometimes you have to do what's best for you.

This is for sbsjb and Kay.... just wanted to tell you the idea of the brothers escorting your daughters is also a very good idea. My younger cousin came up with a similar solution since she was estranged from her father. My cousin has 3 brothers so she had the youngest brother walk her into the church, midway down he handed her to her 2nd oldest brother who then handed her to her eldest brother and he walked her to the groom. It was so beautiful to see that these siblings cared so much for each other and that these young men had truly become men. They were able to step up and be supportive of their sister and help her create beautiful memories of her most important day.

P.S to sbsjb if she wants you to have a part in this I suggest you either be 1st to hand her over to a brother or last to walk her to the groom. Good luck ladies, you've raised beautiful daughters with minds of their own.

May 1st 2010 9:03AM Kudos to you ruthsgardens! You know of what you speak and I agree with you. America needs to get back to business and stop the nonsense of politics. The FBI has Profilers so why shouldn't we use them at our airports? What the Israels do is what all governments need to do. Profile your passengers, interact with them, question them. The real problem comes down to this....Israel's security is based on self preservation while here in the U.S we really don't take the job of security seriously enough. The people put in charge of these departments are usually Political Appointees based on who is owed a favor v.s who is qualified. A perfect example was 9/11 and Katrina. I can't recall the name of the man who was in charge of security for one of the companies in the Twin Towers. This fellow had predicted another assult on the Towers and he was insistant on having emergency drills etc; for his company's employees. Officials in NY City credit him for the number of lives that were saved that day. Sadly, he died trying to get others out of the building. Our government is so wrapped up in their political parties that they loose site of why they were ever elected to office in the first place. WE should follow Israel's lead as you have mentioned. Israel security use to require passengers to be on the tarmac and would require passengers to identify their bags before any bag was loaded on board the aircraft. It was very time consuming but necessary and they never had a flight hijacked or bombed if I remember correctly.

I agree with you re our trade agreements. NAFTA is the biggest mistake ever for America and needs to be disolved. What good is a trade agreement when it doesn't serve all parties/countries concerned i.e America? Out sourcing will be the death of America and until our Government cries UNCLE and throws in the towel we will continue in this downward spiral. We have nothing to gain and are loosing everything. I try looking for products made in America and there isn't anything. China owns us so they will take over the U.S without ever firing a shot. All they have to do is to keep importing the junk they make that is tainted and harmful to us, our children, our pets, our food supply. Sadly, the American people just keep buying into the politics of the day and arguing over petty party lines. Wake up America, wake up. It's not about being a Democrat or a Republican......it's about being an AMERICAN period!

May 1st 2010 7:03AM Joan, there may be illegals in EVERY country in the world but they are not treated better than the citizens of those countries, and they are not marching in the streets DEMANDING THEIR RIGHTS. You try going for public aid for medicaid/food stamps and you see if the red carpet is rolled out for you. Yet, illegals get medical care/food stamps/education/housing and not 1, repeat, not 1 document is required of them to obtain these services. This was told to be by an employee of Public Aid saying, "the Federal Government forbids them from asking for any documents when the person applying for these services is an illegal alien.

A year before my husband died I tried applying for public aid and was denied services. Yet, he was born here, served his country during WWII, worked all his life, paid taxes and filed his tax returns every year and never asked for help from the Federal/State or Local Government. Oh, I also worked 30yrs yet the documents they required would have papered your entire house. You enroll your child in the school system here and you are required to produce all kinds of certificates including birth/medical/dental records and a social security number which by law is now issued to each child born in this country. Yet again, illegals have their children enrolled in our schools and what? They don't have to produce the same documents that American citizens do? Oh, and we employ ESL Teachers to teach their children English also. So you have to ask yourself who is to blame for the mess? It's Politics, plain and simple.

You can argue about having no one to pick the fruit/clean houses/watch the babies etc; but you are really doing our country and the illegals a dis-service. Yes, this only allows them to make a pittance of what their labor is really worth and they are taken advantage of by all who employ them, be it by businesses or in the private sector. So, if you think Americans should just SUCK IT UP you are part of the problem, not the solution.

You try going into Mexico or any other country and take up residency or get employment and you get caught. What do you imagine would happen to you? You would not be treated so kindly that's for sure and would probably end up in prison. Yes, the blame for this problem lies within the Federal Government and employers who know they can hire illegals and not pay for their crimes. It is a crime to employ illegals, yet companies and the private sector continue to do it because our Federal Government treats it as a joke. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck....then it is a duck!

Re Air Travel........What passengers do you know that are profiled? The grandmother in the wheelchair or the likes of the late Senator Edward Kennedy? Oh, I forgot, he was on the no fly list. You can be sure the woman in the Birka (sp) isn't being profiled. In fact, I believe it was just a week ago that a women wearing such garb objected when a TSA Agent asked her to remove it while going through airport security. She felt that her rights were being violated. It makes you laugh, it makes me laugh. Regarding Israel, they know what they are doing. Israel's security is such a science that we could learn a lot from them. Re Israel not operating with integrity, I think not. It is called self-preservation. Where were you in the 70's and 80's when every airliner was being hijacked? Where were you when the Olympic Village was attacked in Germany in the 7o's? Who were the attackers? Who were the victims? I suggest you go back to the history books and do some research. Apparently you missed the part about the Holocaust. You know, the systematic killing of millions of European Jews by the Nazis. Israel's motto is Never Again and I can't blame them. I'm speaking as an American, as a Catholic, as 2nd generation on my father's side and 1st generation on my mother's side. My mother survived WWII as a child in England and my father served during WWII. Oh, my grandparents and my mother entered through the front door of America after they filled out their paper work and waited their turn to come in.

Principal Reduction: Who Deserves It? {Housingwatch}

Apr 28th 2010 2:50PM Hi! I just found out about this and while I haven't filled out any forms yet I plan to. Check out the Federal Government website http://makinghomaffordable.gov/requestmod.shtml and hopefully you'll be on your way. Or you could call the Hope Helpline at 1-888-995-Hope(4673) and ask for MHA Help. I was told you couldn't have more than $2000.00 in all bank accounts combined that you might have. No problem for me as I don't even have $200.00 lol. This is Obama's Relief Program where you can get a Loan Modification to lower your monthly mortgage payments if you qualify. I hope this helps your somewhat, Good Luck!

TSA Proposes Device That Tracks Cell Phones, Wait Times {AOL Travel News}

Mar 26th 2010 10:00AM Vinnie.....a man after my own heart! Well, I'm glad you get it too! What people don't realize is that by declaring a party all you do is open yourself up to all the craziness. The bottom line is not how you vote, but that you vote. And the question that should be asked is, what is best for our country? Not, what's in it for me? As a nation we are on a downward spiral and all that Washington is doing, is confusing the people. Both parties are at fault and the bottom line is, these politicians are only concerned about themselves and getting re-elected for the next term and staying in office for 100 years....lol! Americans need to get wise and stop finger pointing as both parties are equally to blame for this mess that our country is in. I don't know where we're going or how we're getting there and that's a bit scary. I never thought I'd see America in this state. I use to think how foolish the Irish were for all the bombings/killings in the name of religion and being ticked off because of British rule but when you look at it, it makes sense if you're the British government....divide and conquer....that's what they did and that's what is happening here in America. Ghandi once said, "know your enemy!" People need to wake up, Wake Up, WAKE UP, America!

TSA Proposes Device That Tracks Cell Phones, Wait Times {AOL Travel News}

Mar 26th 2010 7:00AM Cheryl, you are sooooo right! The next step as in George Orwell's 1984 will be spying on the citizens through their T.V's. If you haven't read it you should go buy it and see our future mapped. The government did such a number on all of us. HDTV and such will certainly give you a better picture and more programs if you're willing to pay for them. Turns out if you don't sign up for cable and get those black boxes in your home, you can't even access regular/local T.V stations that are suppose to be free. I keep telling my friends/family that I know there is someone inside that box (T.V) looking back at us, lol! Of course everyone just laughs but they say truth is stranger than fiction. I see our privacy rights are being trampled on and not many people are concerned. The government will tell you that you have to give up your privacy in order to stay safe from terrorists.......lol...! Yet we all know that the TSA is the biggest joke. I don't feel any safer with them then giving my social security number to some customer service agent in Mexico or India. Our country is going down the tubes and it seems like all we can do is sit and watch. It seems that everything our government does is self-serving. We are no better off than people in Russia or some third world country. Our government lies to us because it's in our own best interest, politicians lie and cheat and take and receive graft without fear of being caught. And when they are, it's no big deal.......they get sent to a Country Club for a few years and come out with their pensions and health care still intact. Only in American....God help us all!

Can't Ride a Bike at 8 - How Bad? {ParentDish}

Feb 27th 2010 10:16AM Ana, you're on the right track. When my daughter was learning my husband raised only one training wheel up slightly which allowed her to learn how to balance herself on the bike. After a couple of months I arrived home to find her riding with no training wheels. Turns out the boy next door was riding without his training wheels and she didn't want him to call her a baby so she insisted my husband remove her training wheels. She just took off and never looked back. She was 5 at the time and became a demon on wheels.....lol......!
