Big Island Hawaii: A budget travel guide {Gadling}

Jan 27th 2010 2:09PM Gotta agree with Mary. Don't try to make the drive in one day. It's doable, but you won't really be able to appreciate any of the sights.

Other then that, VRBO is a great option. We stayed in a 2 bdrm condo for 6 nights for around 120 a night that was half a block from Kahaluu beach park (amazing snorkeling).

Take your time, enjoy the island. It was one of the best vacations I've ever had.

Nov 11th 2009 10:34AM If you're in San Ignacio, you really need to take a day and go to Caracol. It is a massive Mayan ruin (only partially excavated), but a couple years ago, my brother and I made the trip and we were the only people there the entire day. The road is pretty bad but they were making improvements when we went so it might be better.
