While you probably wanted to portray the generosity of your host, i felt this was a thoughtless comment, considering that poverty and lack of food with any vitamins or minerals is a *real* issue, in, as you mentioned, this third world country.
I volunteered in Nicaragua with families and their children who have a severe lack of food (with any nutrition), and often I felt very uneasy being a while "chele" western traveller in this country with all my trappings of wealth and I felt ashamed to be receiving so much generosity and care from these people.
It made me consider what was important in my life.
