EPA backs away from GM claim of 230 mpg for Volt {Autoblog Green}

Aug 12th 2009 11:04AM What strikes me as funny about the whole MPG debate is that in fact, there is -more- CO2 output from producing the electricity for the electric cars than from straight gas-guzzlers. (see: http://www.newsy.com/videos/all_charged_up_over_the_volt)

Now, if you're doing it for economic reasons, it will take a couple hundred thousand miles to offset the upfront cost. This is assuming of course that you buy it at retail and that all the numbers in reality resemble what GM is advertising.

I actually have a feeling that the 230 number is a conservative estimate. But what I'm curious to see is if that really means anything with the concerns expressed above.

Google Chrome OS under development {TUAW.com}

Jul 9th 2009 10:07AM Interestingly, The Register reported, “No one will be happier than Microsoft about Google's vanity venture to market computers with a Google-brand OS. It gives us the illusion of competition without seriously troubling either business…” A whole video report on the expectations can be found at http://www.newsy.com/videos/google_gears_up_for_os.

Although I can see this being a great thing for netbook users, I don't see it gaining any significant ground on desktops or even laptops, simply because, as Microsoft has proved time and again, the majority don't care about lightweight OSes. Most are more concerned about versatility on their machine (I want to play the latest games and work on my powerpoint).

Angry British mob chases Google out of their town {Gadling}

Apr 23rd 2009 6:26PM It seems kind of silly that they're making such a big deal out of it. People take pictures with their personal cameras all the time. And it seems practically everyone uploads their photos to Flickr these days. Considering Google even does the courtesy of blurring faces and license plate numbers, I don't know how this is any worse than finding yourself in someone else's Flickr or Facebook picture.

As The Canadian Press put it, “Obviously you need to protect privacy, and you need to work with governments and local authorities to make sure that any concerns they may have, you have to answer to them. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.” (The Canadian Press as quoted at http://www.newsy.com/videos/privacy_in_the_age_of_google/)

U.S. economy now five million jobs below full employment {BloggingStocks}

Mar 10th 2009 7:16PM You provide good numbers, but I think the future of the job market will not be as easily reduced to numbers as the current one is.

According to newsy.com, there's "...another group standing to benefit—freelancers." And freelancers from my experience tend to have a better handle on how to exploit legal loopholes to maximize profit than standard employees. Which means the numbers could cease to accurately reflect the economic reality.
