May 31st 2012 1:58AM When I was in Russia last fall, I was glad that I looked like a tourist. The locals tried to help me, even though they did not speak English. I read Russian (slowly) and when people on the Moscow subway saw me struggling, they offered me help. Throughout the trip, I got the feeling that the locals were happy to have me as a tourist.
On trips to Finland, I found that people managed to communicate with me even though we knew only a couple of words in each other's language. The locals acted like dealing with tourists was a natural thing to do, and dealt with us comfortably.

May 7th 2012 9:49PM I am an adventure traveler who has done many private and many outfitted trips and has led many wilderness outings. To me, backpacking means going places where there are no hostels, restaurants, or clubs.
I have found that in many commercially outfitted adventure trips, social interactions are mostly competitive and not at all friendly. On the Elderhostel (now Road Scholar) trips, people are generally cooperative and give and receive help comfortably. I have done many trips (like skiing across the Hardangervidda National Park in Norway) that I would not consider doing solo. I want to have at least one other person on a wilderness trip who has my level of competence and skill. For that reason, I try to find somebody who has my interests and abilities, and do a lot of trips with him/her.

Mar 20th 2011 11:43PM I guess I am a weird traveler. I rarely go somewhere to see the place. I go to do something. I have been to Oslo, Norway, three times. In all cases, I was passing through on my way to do something. One time, I arrived of a sailing cruise along Oslo Fiord. Another time, I was on my way to a ski tour across the Hardangervidda National Park, and the other time, I was on my way to a hiking trip across the Jotunheimen National Park. What I noticed was the differences in Oslo between the seasons, not between the times. I traveled by public transportation and stayed in Hostels on all these trips, and met locals on a personal basis. That is the way to travel!

Dec 10th 2010 1:39PM Speaking as a chemist, I will start out saying that sugars are a very complicated subject, and that businesses exploit that for their own banefit.
In the first place common table sugar, which is called sucrose, is a compound made up of one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose. Glucose is not as sweet as sucrose. Fructose is sweeter than sucrose. Corn syrup is made from corn starch. Starch is made up of a lot of molecules of glucose, so corn syrup is almost pure glucose, and is not as sweet as table sugar.
We clever chemists found a way to convert part of the glucose in corn syrup to fructose, giving HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). It is sweeter than the corn syrup that it is made from. That allows manufacturers to cut down on the amount of sweetener needed in their product. They make more money that way!
Have I confused you enough! It gets even more complicated and more abused, but I won't bother you with that now.

Nov 30th 2010 8:34PM Old fashioned soap works wonders in breaking the foam. Wave a soap bar throuth the foam and it will collapse. Old fashioned Ivory Snow sprinkled on the foam will break it down. That is, if old fashioned Ivory Snow is still the same thing.
