Summer Hotspot: Havana, Cuba {Gadling}

Apr 12th 2012 2:09PM The available trips are a great step forward and many Americans will prefer their first visit to Cuba be in a guided tour. But they will find they are not exactly alone. More than last year's 2.7 million foreign tourists plus 400,000 Cuban Americans are expected to visit Cuba in 2012.

What we need now is for the President to give all self-attesting people to people visitors the same general license he gave to self-attesting Cuban American family visitors. That way self directed travelers, families, backpackers, etc. could join Europeans and Canadians to rent cars, pick up hitch-hikers, use the public bus and train and stay in privately owned bed and breakfasts, the best way to achieve spontaneous people to people contact.

It will also remove travel from the secretive, slow and arbitrary judgments of the Office of Foreign Assets Control which is still led by a Bush appointee.

Aug 7th 2009 8:02PM The preceding comment is so propagandistic and political that it serves as an object lesson in what the enemies of Cuba are prepared to do. It is hard to dispute anecdotal assertions. Cuba like everyplace in the world has problems. However, one lie stands out and raises questions about the credibility of the whole post.

Cuba does have a currency that was designed for use by foreigners, the CUC, an effect of the abnormal situation created by the US embargo and in particular Bush Administration efforts to stop Cuba from trading dollars internationally. However, there is no restriction on Cubans holding and spending CUCs. In fact, some people receive part of their salary in CUC.

Does the courageous Mr or Ms Wise also oppose tourism to China and Egypt and Saudi Arabia, all of which have serious human rights problems?

Aug 4th 2009 10:47PM Craig is wrong and may be trying to scare off potential signers. Over 70,000 have joined the Opentravel campaign to date, thanks to Orbitz. Two thirds of Americans want to end all restrictions on travel to Cuba.

Jan 5th 2009 9:20AM Travel to Cuba won't happen unless the 2/3 of Americans who favor it make their voices heard with the new administration.

Here's one way to do so
