Caring for Your Aging Cat - 9 Common Issues You Should Know About {Pawnation}
Dec 11th 2010 10:47AM Please check on the cost of the insulin again. I have a diabetic cat. She has been diabetic for almost 4 years now. It does not cost 600 dollars a month for insulin, even for two cats. Their insulin requirement is usually between 2 and 8 units twice a day. My cat needs 4 units twice a day. The insulin I use is Lantus insulin. It is a human insulin. There is an insulin made for animals that is a lot more expensive but it isn't necessary to use it. Human is just fine. There is 1000 units in a bottle so the bottle lasts me about 4 months. The bottle of insulin costs about 115 dollars depending on which pharmacy you go to. You ask for generic needles and they will cost about 13 dollars for 100 needles. As for having their blood glucose levels checked you just do that about every 4 to 5 days when they first start out so you can determine what the dosage should be. Then you have it checked every 3 months or so unless you think there is a problem. A glucose check at my vet is 21 dollars. You don't need a glucose curve done. I am a veterinary technician and our practice sees many, many cats with diabetes. It is very managable and not that expensive. My diabetic cat is also hypertensive and hyperthyroid for which she also takes medications. It gets put right in her food and she's good to go. She's 19 and counting. I also have two other cats and 2 dogs. I don't know where you live but in my area it's just not that expensive. If your vet is telling you it is then you need to go to another vet or else you have misunderstood him or her. If you don't give them the insulin they may not live much longer and we have cats in our practice that are in their twenties. Sixteen isn't that old yet for a cat. I hope I have been of some help and good luck.
