MSFT retail: They laughed at Apple {BloggingStocks}
Oct 16th 2009 2:55PM And, every time MS enters a new business venture, people like yourself point out that MS is huge, dominant and in for the long haul, and so they shouldn't be counted out. Okay, we're still waiting for another dominating success more than a decade old.
MSFT retail: They laughed at Apple {BloggingStocks}
Oct 16th 2009 2:52PM You wrote "it would be foolish to overlook one simple fact: Microsoft is what it is. It's enormous. It's dominant. The success of its competitors is measured in single digits of market share captured at best."
It's dominant where? OSes and business suite software. Those businesses were started a LONG time ago. There are plenty of reasons why they became dominant in those industries, some of them illegal. Now, how does that apply any better than using any of their more recent forays in new business ventures to their store venture? It doesn't. MS may be dominant in OSes and business suite software, but where is it in mobile OSes? Where is it in gaming hardware? Where is it in HTPCs? Where is it in touchscreen devices? Where is it in music players? Where is it in music stores? Where is it in search? There's way more recent business ventures that have not been dominating than have been.
Newspapers resist Apple Tablet, like they've resisted everything else {BloggingStocks}
Oct 3rd 2009 8:15PM Uhm, the iPod did NOT destroy the music industry. It saved the music industry which was being destroyed by piracy on P2P networks like Limewire.
What the music industry doesn't like about the iPod is that it has become the defacto 800 pound gorilla, replacing WalMart. The industry didn't like when WalMart controlled the CD market, and they don't like that Apple seems to be replacing them. The industry sees this as an opportunity lost in controlling their own destiny. That's what they don't like.
What the publishing industry is facing is something similar to what happened to music in that Google is eating the publishing industry's advertising dollars, and the internet is replacing print. This is ALREADY happening. The writing is already on the wall for newspapers. Apple hasn't even released a media tablet and we already know the print media industry is in inevitable decline. Apple's reported entry is one way to monetize the business. If the publishers have another way, then by all means they should roll out their plans. What happened in the music industry is that the publishers had no coordinated plan and Apple did. Let's hope the publishing industry has a plan, but I think it's too late. Too much information is already free. Setting up subscription services at this stage of the game is too little too late.
Survey: Average iPhone user has spent $80 on apps {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Sep 9th 2009 1:00PM So, 65 apps, with 65% free, means 23 paid apps. If $80 is the average spent, then that means the avg spent on a paid app is $3.47.
Now, the $1.56 avg times 65 apps comes out to $101. You'd think they'd have said the avg iPhone buyer has spent over $100 on apps, then.
There seems to have been a transcription error in the report or something. Either way, the numbers seem reasonable to me.
Nokia's Surge official on AT&T, ships July 19 for $79.99 {Engadget}
Jul 13th 2009 10:46AM One, the story mentions Flash, but which Flash is it, Flash Lite or full Flash? There's a difference, and Flash Lite which a number of phones have, is pretty much used for video.
The AT&T data plan is UNLIMITED. It's not capped like Verizon.
AT&T has an app on the iPhone that lets you look at your usage and your bill, and make changes to your plan.
Road Tested: Ecamm BT-1 Bluetooth webcam (& we're giving one away!) {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 7th 2009 3:01PM I could use a wireless webcam to use as a security cam for when I'm off in China. I could pair it with SecuritySpy software.

Jun 25th 2009 4:57PM Who needs to fly around? Find out what State has the shortest list, and drive there, rent an apartment and wait. Anyone with a computer can "game" the system, not just rich people with access to private jets. Heck, if you're well enough, fly commercial, and wait.
Microsoft does well with Xbox 360, but needs to try harder {BloggingStocks}
Jun 3rd 2009 8:53AM Wow, are you saying MS has a "victory" with its Xbox 360 over Sony? Do you know that they LOST MONEY last quarter on its Xbox division? That's the kind of no-profit "victory" that runs companies out of business.
Apple upgraded by Morgan Stanley {BloggingStocks}
May 26th 2009 9:43AM Huberty is a nut. How is it she finally gets it about the iPhone? Where has she been the last two years when she was driving the price down with downgrades.
First Look: Scannerless scanning with Creaceed Prizmo {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Apr 22nd 2009 2:38PM I like to take photos of funny signs when I travel to China. Having Prizmo would help straighten them out.
