Across Austraila by train {Gadling}

Jul 26th 2009 8:10PM The Ghan has only operated the northern part of the route - from Alice Springs to Darwin - since 2004. That's hardly 80 years. It was an important historic train connecting Port Augusta and Adelaide to Alice Springs previously, but less than 1000 miles. This is probably what Shindig is referring to - for most of its life the Ghan has only gone part way across the country.

Cockpit Chronicles: Catching a little show in Paris {Gadling}

Jul 11th 2009 9:28PM Rich,

Regarding the hotel rooms, keep in mind that most flights to Europe arrive early in the morning, so they are likely waiting for the rooms to be cleaned after others check out. As a normal traveler you might not get a room until check-in time of 3pm or something. So I'm guessing the airline already has a special arrangement to get the rooms as early as they do. The only other option would be to book in the room for the night before, but that would be a lot of extra cost.

How safe is your in-flight entertainment? Possibly, not very. {Gadling}

Mar 25th 2009 5:44PM It's not just a disaster *waiting* to happen, such a disaster already happened! SwissAir Flight 111 crashed into the North Atlantic Ocean in 1998, killing all 229 people on board, due to a wiring fault with the in-flight entertainment system. Inadequate regulation allowed flammable materials to be installed close to the wiring, so the wiring fault caught the rest of the plane on fire. Quite a few recommendations were made but were they taken seriously enough to prevent a re-occurrence? Some don't think so.

Airbus A380 to become the new Air Force One? {Gadling}

Jan 21st 2009 1:29AM Given the 2017 date, I think a 787/Dreamliner based plane from Boeing is the most likely alternative.
The problem with the A380, besides the obvious fact that it's European, is that it can land at so few airports - and the president has to go lots of places. Runway lengths and taxiway standards are just too restrictive for the A380, even as more airports outfit themselves for it. The Dreamliner would be much more appropriate, or maybe 747-8s if the largest possible size is needed and that program gets off the ground.

Man gets his arm stuck in train toilet {Gadling}

Oct 29th 2008 1:07AM The interesting thing is this isn't the first time this has happened. There was a very similar occurrence on a Metro-North commuter train in the New York City area a few years back; follow-up story here:

Travel Alert! Virgin sale to from LA - Sydney -- for $480! {Gadling}

Oct 23rd 2008 8:47PM For a while I was getting the good fares consistently with a return date of Friday 13 March, but it appears it's gone now - either it was a glitch they fixed, or all the cheap seats have been scooped up....congrats to those who got 'em while they lasted!

Travel Alert! Virgin sale to from LA - Sydney -- for $480! {Gadling}

Oct 23rd 2008 4:40PM Um, this airline is called "V Australia" - the word Virgin doesn't appear anywhere on their web site. It's a bit confusing to refer to it as Virgin in your post. Yes, it's affiliated with the Virgin Group, but it's a distinct airline from either Virgin Blue or Virgin America.

Indonesian Gov't Backs Off Bikini Ban {Gadling}

Oct 23rd 2008 4:37PM On my recent trip to Bali, there were several women without a bikini top at all! Don't tell the Indonesian government about that...
