Gadling Giveaway: Road Trip USA {Gadling}

Apr 20th 2009 8:44PM You've heard of the Alamo, but have you heard of Goliad? If you're a history buff, you need to visit Goliad, Texas, a little town in South Texas where the saga of Texas Independence from Mexico continued following the Alamo. Mexican forces faced off against Colonel James Fannin and his troops here (unfortunately, it did not end too well for Fannin, resulting in the "Goliad Massacre."). There is a Spanish fort, Presidio La Bahia, dating to the mid 1700s and a Mission Church, Mission Espiritu Santo, along with a historic courthouse district. (The presidio & mission complex is the last surviving example in Texas and one of the few in North America.)

Mar 31st 2009 7:33AM Interesting that the letter for "sh" somewhat (not quite, but enough for me to remember) resembles the Chinese character for Shan - mountain. Also, in Arabic the sound "sh" is written similarly, but with three dots added to the top. Fascinating stuff!

In China, would you buy meat from this guy? {Gadling}

Mar 31st 2009 12:46AM I HAVE bought meat from this guy! I've also bought kebabs from a guy dancing in a Bin Laden mask. Evan is right, the kebabs at the beer festival are the best around. A little expensive on the China street food scale, but worth it!

The festival is a highlight of our year here in Shandong Province. I've had some crazy fun times there!

Woman throws tantrum after missing her flight {Gadling}

Feb 17th 2009 3:06AM All I can say is Thank God we do have people like this out there in the world. Otherwise, what would we have to comment on?! It gave me a good chuckle, as I'm sure it did you all.

Plane Answers: Fear of flying, aging aircraft and more on those 'dings.' {Gadling}

Jan 15th 2009 9:03AM I used to be very anxious flying, still am a little, but what has helped me the most was becoming a licensed FAA Ground Instructor. Now that I know all the theory and science behind flying, I understand how safe flying can be.

However, I was getting on a flight from Shanghai to Vancouver a few days ago and struggled to express to my pilot husband how anxious I felt. I wanted to say, "I feel nervous about possible turbulence," and what came out was, "I'm nerbulent." It's already become a classic line in our family.

Galley Gossip: The art of maintaining service (when service is the last thing on the mind) {Gadling}

Oct 16th 2008 12:59AM Great post!

I'm a PPL ground instructor working at a flight school in China. Just today I was discussing with my students the role of the flight attendant and I emphasized that they are there for safety. Your column, along with the Cockpit Chronicles, will provide me with lots of interesting anecdotes to share with my students. Thanks!
